What's new is that they aren't even trying to distinguish Lincoln from Ford anymore. Mercury was usually the badge engineered alternative to Ford. Nobody would mistake a Town Car for a Crown Vic or Grand Marquis. The FWD 4.6 DOHC Continental was unique to Lincoln. The Mark VIII with the coolest interior, awesome motor and unique body shape would never be confused for a T-bird or Cougar.
But look at what they are doing lately, say the last 4-5 years. Does anybody not recognize the Explorer in the Aviator or the Expy in the Navigator? What about the F-150 in the Mark LT. It is only recently that the Lincoln versions have become dressed up Fords without some really unique, trendsetting or outstanding design unique to Lincoln. This Zephyr should really wear the Mercury badge, while a truly unique design and exceptional powertrain should be engineered for the platform to make it truly a Lincoln instead of such a thinly veiled Ford. They are moving Lincoln so far downmarket as to squeeze Mercury completely out of options. With very close Ford and Lincoln designs, a third model wearing a Mercury badge would be like a third dick on a queer honeymoon. Who needs it?
