RE: annoying squeaking noise, sound firmiliar?
Yeah, that sounds familar. From a previous post...
At one time or another, we all will face the inevitable... squeak, squeak, squeak... from the pulleys or serpentine belt. Well, the '93 started a barely susceptible squeak not long ago, and today was a good day to change the oil and identify the culprit. After all, a squeaky belt or pulley on a Lincoln just doesn't fit the image
I was confident it wasn't the belt, since it had recently been replaced proactively. I'd figured it to be the idler pulley, so I bought one at Advance Auto a couple of weeks ago. To start, I grabbed a piece of heater hose, popped the hood and started the engine. Holding one end of the hose to my ear, I proceeded to identify the source by holding the other end at each pulley listening for the tell tale sign. It didn't take long to identify the tensioner pulley as the source of the noise.
I shut off the engine and proceeded to replace the pulley. I released the tension from the belt with a 1/2" breaker bar and pulled the belt off the alternator pulley and released the tensioner. I used a 10mm socket to remove the three bolts retaining the tensioner assembly to the engine. After removing the tensioner assembly, I placed it upside down in a vise and used a 1/2" socket to remove the retaining bolt securing the pulley to the end of the tensioner arm. I installed the new pulley using a little never-sieze on the bolt, then replaced the tensioner assembly, again using a little never-sieze on the three mounting bolts. Using the 1/2" breaker bar to hinge the tensioner arm down once again, I replaced the belt back over top of the alternator pulley, making certain the belt remained seated on each pulley properly before releasing the tensioner. It took maybe 10-15 minutes overall. I double checked the alignment of the belt and started the engine. No more squeak!
BTW, both the idler pully and the tensioner pulley are the same. It is a 76mm flat steel pulley without flanges. I used Dayco part number 89007 which sells for about $15 at Advance Auto.
