Anyone Else Enjoying this Apple Fumble?

I've been waiting for months to get my hands on this Apple Computer 2.0 firm update for my iPod touch as well as getting my hands on the new 3G iPhone. What a fiasco trying to get the firmware update, getting phones registered, and the like.
I think maybe someone from Microsoft was running this.
Any other thoughts?

I started to update my iPhone this morning and got the -4 error and a useless phone. I checked the Apple forums and they indicated it was just a matter of time and the problem would right itself. So I went and took a nice long lunch and when i came back I tried again and everything loaded and worked fine. No biggie, just a minor inconvenience really.

No problems here with anything at all. For every five thousands success stories there will be one bad one. After selling as many as they have, there will be a lot of bad stories! lol

But that what happens when you push a system past its limit. Its like complaining about traffic jams. What to do, build 500 lane highways just so when things peak its not so bad? What about the rest of the time and cost to build that. Same thing with servers and bandwidth. They shore up as best as they can but when the flood gates open there will still be problems. Sorta like the Digg effect.

This was not really that way and it wasn't 1 in 5,000 that had trouble, it was more like 1 in 5,000 went smoothly. The mistake Apple made was to release the new phone AND release the software update on the same day WORLDWIDE. The new phone needed to access the server to get activated and the old phones needed the same server to update. Since both required the same server the system simply couldn't take the traffic. If they had released the update the day before or even two days before it probably would have gone a lot more smoothly.

They really do use different servers. In fact, most of the software updates went through akamai servers and other mirrors.

I do agree that the update should have come out earlier though.

The ones that got hit the hardest with this was the iPod touch users. No downloads started until late in the evening. I ended get mine done at 2:40 am. From there is has been smooth sailing. Lots of nice apps and great mail features as well.
Anxious to see if Uncle Steve will address this in some way.
