Are Gen 1 Marks More Desirable Than Gen 2s?

I love the black grills on the Gen 2s and the HIDs and neons but for some reason I always buy a Gen 1, well, this is my second 95. I guess it doesn't require emission testing and seems to be easier to soup up. What does everybody else prefer and why?

I loved my Gen 1, and I drove it mercilessly... :D

But once I had the 2nd Gen, I don't think I could go back...

I'm not even sure I can adequately tell you why, there were some things I liked about the Gen 1 that I miss on the Gen 2 (like the traction button next to the rear defroster button) and some things I like about the Gen 2 that the 1st Gen never had (HIDs, neon, fatter heated front seats)...

I like gen 1's more myself. Would I pay more for a gen 1 then a gen 2, generally speaking, no. although I did pay for my my CE then I did any other mark viii, but that was because I wanted a CE, not because it was a gen 2.

There definitely is a Gen 1 group (includes me) and a Gen 2 group here in the forums. Fortunately Lincoln owners tend to be more mature, so the rivalry stays civil. And really, the two cars are so similar, who'se going to quibble over simple things like larger headlamps, different grills, different rear facias, etc.?

Now if this was a ricer Acura forum, two slightly different trim lines would probably have to split into two different message boards...

I guess it depends what you desire more.

We all know the Gen1s are faster. :D

For me, it is more what I don't like on the Gen2s more than what I like in the Gen1s. I don't particularly care for the Gen2 front end (comparatively). After all, you can have HIDs on the Gen1s. :D

The rear neon is cool (when it works) but not enough to sway the overall choice.

Then there is the Gen2 intake. :(

Then the Gen2 thing about pulling timing during shifts and when the traction control kicks in.

And let's not forget the problematic blend door issue.

I do like the Gen2 seats vs. the Gen1s but I can't find any blue ones. :p

just do what i have done for the last 7 years, own one of each!! i have had 6 gen 1's and i am on my 3rd gen 2. yeah you rear right, 9 marks in 7 years, i have a mental problem!

I'm stuck on the year. That's because the Gen1 has comparatively less issues to handle then the above mentioned Gen ll models as well as a little more attitude in the front. I also am partial to OBD 2, so it stands that I go for 1996 models.

For me Gen 2s...

I just like the way they look more and I like the OBDII...

Plus the 98 trans is the best you can get in a mark stock...

The 1st gens intake flows more but it doesn't matter to me because I was always going to end up modding my car anyway.

lol I have not seen a thread on this subject in a long time... ;)

For old times sake... Gen 2's rule and Gen 1's drool lol

<< .....9 marks in 7 years, I have a mental problem! >>

Where does that leave Jeremi "Mad1stGen"???

I never had a 1st Gen, I dove straight for the Gen 2.

The little things I miss from my Gen 1's are the dual sun visors, leather pockets on the seat backs and the under hood light. The things I don't miss are not being able to see the road at night, servicing the IAC solenoid, and breaking the intermediate one way clutch after one to many 2nd gear tire chirps. But which ever Gen you choose it's still a Mark VIII!

I did a test drive on both Gen 1 and Gen 2, but prefered the Gen 2. I actually thought the rear was better looking that the front on the Gen 2 originally . . . now I like her from all angles.

(I prefer the interior of the Gen 2.)

let me rephrase it, i have owned 9 registered in my name mark VIII's, but, i have had a little over 1600 since 1998 lmao!!!! most mark VIII's out there today may very well have one of my parts on it! we have kept a lot of them going!

Gen ones

Gen ones

I'll stick my vote in here for the gen 1s. Love the styling, especially the grille and rear. LSCs get my vote on both models 1st and 2nd gen.
I like the interior better in gen 1's as well.
But everyone has their own taste. I just think the gen ones are more masculine and meaner looking. The gen 2s are more soft and flowing as well as more refined. I will stick with the Gen ones. We all know there faster.:D

The only thing i'd change if i were styling it would be to loose like 4-6inches in the back seat, not needed and would lessen the wheelbase. Also throw some of the trunk length out as well and make smaller rear side windows. (i think the trunk could really be cut down to half the size of its deepness and still be more than enough.
haha No, not as small as a Mustang, but smaller just the same, say like the Pontiac GTO size. Could still have the Mark VIII lines and smoothness, just be shorter wheelbase and less trunk.

I can remember the last time someone had the audacity to write "Gen 2's rule and Gen 1's drool" (which they do :D ) or visa versa... :D :D :D

I miss the double visors as well, since it was mentioned...

Me too...more attitude and OBDII.

I would have prefered to get an LSC, but 96 LSC's are too rare these days.

I dunno, I don't miss people calling my 94 a Thunderbird... :D

No one called the 98 that...
they just ask "what is it?"
