I have been tempted to buy this motherboard and make a killer machine - any opinions?

I've been an Asus fan for several years. Quality boards IMO. I built my one of my own PCs with an Asus P3B-F. Mated with a P3-500 CPU, 512MB RAM, 13GB ATA-100 HDD, CDRW and a then killer video card(3D Blaster Riva TNT2 Ultra 32MB SDRAM), this PC has outperformed many models I've seen since and even today will more than hang with most machines on all but the most power hungry games.

I am holding off - Intel just released that new chip set with the 800 mhz bus - that is sick! If I remember correctly it can handle bandwith up to 4.2 ghz. I have looked around and can't seem to find it for sale anywhere. It might not have been released yet.

I would let the market settle the pricing on the 800mHz FSB boards - too new now especially with buggy chipsets. My thinking it is a great time(economically) to buy 533mHz FSB boards with the higher bus speeds coming out.
I've found that a lot of that 'new' generational speed goes away as Windows swells with new apps, etc...

I was just at www.alienware.com - they are already offerinfg the 3.00HT with the 800 mhz bus. Not so bad, I customized a nicely equipped one for about $2500 - no monitor though!

I'll find out how good Asus is in the next few weeks. I purchased an Asus Socket A motherboard from Tiger Direct a month ago along with the AMD XP2200 Processor and 512MB of PC2700 DDR Ram. Had problems (I thought) with the RAM, but contacted Asus to help me determine which was the problem, RAM or motherboard. Asus determined that it was the motherboard. Amazing, they didn't try to blame the memory module first, eh? Anyway, they gave me an RMA # and will be sending it back on Monday. It's the A7V333 Motherboard.
We find out how good the company is, not by how things go when there ISN'T a problem, but when there IS! Will keep you all informed.

Well, ASUS hasn't impressed me now at all!! Got motherboard back from them and guess what? They only "repaired" a charged for problem! They claim that the processor chip socket was damaged by me and charged me $15.00 to replace it...they never did even try to fix my "memory" problem...or even mention it. And after re-installing it, I have the exact same problem as prior to sending it in. Called them Friday and talked to an answering machine that promised to call me back. HA! No call yet. More to come after I get to talk to them.

ASUS responded to my request for help with an email telling me how to install a motherboard and in what order to install the drivers. No help at all. After using a working computer with a different MB and a day of swapping components we finally gave up on the ASUS A7V333 MB and I ordered another one. Now I hear that this MB (the A7V) just don't work well with AMD processors. So, I ordered the one that we spent all day swapping parts out of and into. It's an ASrock K7S 8X. Will let y'all know how it goes when I get it. Won't be shipped until Tuesday.

Installed the ASrock M/B and it is and has been working just as one would want. Used the same memory chips that ASUS said was my problem...and they work fine. Anyone want an ASUS A7V333, slightly used motherboard? Real funny postnote: ASrock is manufactured by ASUS!

Unfortunately at this point not to many vendors offer a truely good level of customer support after the sale, Asus included. The don't make to bad a product overall though. I am very pleased with their barebone notebook line in particular (I'm using one right now.. nice..)
Asus wouldn't be my first pick for an AMD based system, but should do well for a P4 box anyday.
We use alot of MSI stuff for our Athlons nowadays and are very pleased overall with it, even when it breaks (which is, thankfully, rare).
If you're tired of building your own boxes we'd be happy to take care of that for you as well
- we do 'em up right.
