ATF +4 or Mercon V?

I will be doing my 1-2 accumulator this weekend and also a trans filter and fluid change. I was wondering if I can use ATF+4 instead of Mercon V because I like the fact that ATF +4 is a full synthetic from Valvoline and Mercon V is a synthetic blend. I was at Autozone and noticed they have Mercon VI now, is that a new improved Mercon V? Does everybody use a Ford filter or a parts store filter? The Ford dealer here wants $35 for theirs so I was wondering if its better or just stealership shenanigans? Thanks!

Use the Motorcraft filter and it can be purchased at several locations other than the FOMOCO dealer.

Royal Purple is an old and reliable company with a good reputation. I used to use it about a hundred years ago but then it was because it was unique, not because it was a good product. I dont know what they offer today, but I do know these transmissions are a bit touchy about Mercon 5, and I refuse to use anything else in them. Even the earlier Mercons lead to problems, and you can buy a whole lot of Mercon 5 for the same money that it costs to rebuild the tranny.

Can anyone tell me where you can but Mercon V, O Reilys, Pep Bys, Wal-Mart??

I bought my Mercon V at Autozone. Castro cost $4.99 per quart and Coastal brand was $3.99 per quart. Make sure it says Mercon V on the front of the bottle.
