RE: Attention! ATi owners.... New Drivers available

Good grief, what's with the mile long text?

Anyway, I realize you're an ATI guy, but what have you heard about the nVidia GeForce FX cards? I know they had some problems with the first cards, but it sounds like they've gone all out on the newest ones. The 5900 is supposed to whoop the 9800's butt, but it's a bit pricey for the 256MB ($500!). I was consdidering the 128MB. I suppose it's time to upgrade the CPU too. I'm running a Thunderbird 1400, but may go with a P4 this time. Just waiting to hear what the new Via chipsets will do compared to the Intel. Money IS an object unfortunately though.

There's too much cool stuff coming out that'll need major horsepower, like Doom III, Deus Ex 2, Thief 3. I'm especially looking forward to Deus Ex 2. The first one was a fantastic game, but few people have even heard of it.

RE: Attention! ATi owners.... New Drivers available

I am a nVIDIA fan, I just figured i would notify you ATi guys of new drivers.

As for the FX line, the 5800 was a flop, the new 5900 is kicking butt, it doesnt smoke the 9800, they are both pretty much level with the 5900 pulling ahead slightly.

If you want to upgrade within budget, I would suggest a new amd system. As for the motherboard chipset stay far away from Via, go with the nforce2 from nvidia, its the only decent AMD chipset out now, its the best actually. Well i could list a high-perf system within bidget here:

cpu: AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton - $95
mobo: Epox 8RDA+ nforce2 mobo - $90
ram: 512MB PC2700 - $80
vid card: Radeon 9600 Pro or FX5600 Ultra, both under $200

I could vary that slightly depending on your budget, need any extra help, just shoot me an email or a message, or you could reply to this thread :) .

You could build a kick ass AMD rig under $500, minus monitor kb, mouse, etc...

A Radeon 9600 Pro or 5600 Ultra will run anything new pretty well, Doom III will be a taxing game, but a setup like the one above should run it beautifully.

Of those game you listed, how could you not be looking forward to Half-Life 2?

No kidding! The next video card I buy is the one that'll let me run that game :) (I'm currently running a Radeon 9700 that I'm quite happy with for the moment.)

I have been on the fence about getting the new MSI board that you can set the overclocking right from the BIOS and it automatically will adjust to your needs.

Christ man.....

A 9700?!?

Umm... That thing should able to run any game coming out for the next two years perfectly, the 9800 Pro and FX5900 Ultras are only about 10% faster than the 9700's on average.

Well I don't know about running perfectly for the next two years, considering a new generation of video cards comes about every six months. The card is almost a year old right now, and after three years of life it might get me by but I doubt I'll be pounding the FPS the way I like.

But I'm also banking on the fact that Half Life 2 will be delayed. I'll be absolutely floored if it comes out when they say it'll be out (aren't they still saying it's over a year away?). If my current rig can run it then all the better, but I'm not counting on it :)

Dude, OMG have some faith man. Thee 9700 is a *kickass* card, you can count on it being able to run Doom III and HL2 perfectly, the top of the line 9800 Pro has nothing over the 9700 but a higher clockspeed, the 9700 is a DX9 card and Microsoft said no DX10 for atleast 4 years, so were fine. That 9700 should be able to run any game out there period at 1600x1200 perfectly until atleast the end of next year, Doom III is optimized for a minimum Geforce 3/Radeon 8500 level cards and the 9700 is 3x faster than those cards so you are fine, you should be able to run anything you want.

What processor and how much ram ya got?

Well that's reassuring :) The card is a great piece of hardware but at first the driver support was crap; I had some pretty poor performance on some games which has damaged my faith in it (although at the time I was running less RAM, which certainly didn't help).

I'm running an AMD Athlon XP 2000 with 1.2GB DDR400 RAM. My mobo can support a faster processor, but I figured a 2000 was good enough for now (well, when I built it last September) and I can max it out once the faster processors come down in price.

RE: Attention! ATi owners.... New Drivers available

Ati's hardware support is getting better man, their drivers of late have been very good.

Thats a pretty good setup, what mobo you got? a nforce2?

You should be able to run everything pretty fudging well with that much ram, kickass card, and the processor. Well considering you have a 2000+. You can pickup a 2800+ Barton for under $200 nowadays, your running DDR400 so it should run just fine. BTW, I would use newegg.com to buy any new hardware, they have great prices, very low shipping (free on cpus and video cards, most lcs monitos, and other things), and they consistenly rate tops in the ratings as far as onlone retailers go, they have amazing support and reliability so dont hesitate getting stuff from them at all. You can check out their ratings at:

ATI's driver support has been getting better, so I think I'm finally getting the most out of the hardware. Everything I play now runs well. I should benchmark it to see how well it does. I was out of computer gaming for a long time (lack of funds), so I don't have a lot to reference my computer's performance.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-7VAXP. I don't know if the Nforce2 was out when I built my machine (last September). Anyway, it gets the job done. I think it was the first board to have AGP 8x, which I did really want since the 9700 was the first card to support it :)

Thanks for the link, I may be picking up a processor in a couple of months. I think my mobo can support a 2800, I'll have to check out Gigabyte's website.

RE: Attention! ATi owners.... New Drivers available

Oh and just a note, the poor performance in games may have been well because of the KT400 mobo you got. Via chipsets have a long problem history with AGP 8x cards, their latest mobos are getting better, but I think you should grab the latest chipset drivers from Via just incase. You can download the Via Hyperion 4-in-1's here: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=300

Ironically, the nvidia nforce2 chipset is the oly chipset that has had no known compatability problems running AGP 8x Radeons.

BTW, there is no noticeable speed difference between AGP4x and 8x, 8x is just a marketing gimmick.

If you ever have any unresolved problems with your Radeon, head over to the http://www.rage3d.com forums.

And for you nvidia guys, http://www.nvnews.net is the place for you.
