Auto glide stopped...

So, after waxing my Mark on Sunday the passenger side seat's auto glide feature stopped working, out of the blue. It has never failed me before.

The drivers seat still works fine.

If I use the switches on the side of the seat it moves the seat forward and back just fine with no abnormal issues / concerns, or noises....which obviously rules out an issue with the motor.

Are their particular sensors that activate the auto glide? Anybody have this problem before?

I searched and looked through some posts, but couldn't find anything. Bill's post was useful - but my motors all work fine and that seemed to be his issue.

Thanks!

Doug

Year? It was a 96 right? Those have a sensor inside the seat bottom that sense when someone sits down which stops the seat from moving back anymore. That could be failing. If it's a Gen 2, the option in the menu....wait that's only for the drivers seat.

On the gen 2s, there must also be a switch connected to the seat back someplace, causing it to move forward when the seat back is flipped. (and then back again, happily crushing whoever just got into the back seat. :) ) Perhaps that switch is stuck? I've never tried to locate it, but the first thing I'd try is to just grab the headrest and flip the seat back, back and forth a few times?

I had an issue with my '96 passenger seat which apparently was nothing more than a harness connection somewhere that had gone awry. Upon disassembly and finding nothing wrong, I installed the track back in place to find it started working. I simply put everything back together and it has been fine since.

...it's a '95 so Gen I. No option to turn it off or control it via message center.

I'll see if I can play with that sensor under the seat to and see if it is a problem. Apart from the sensor that can tell if somebody is sitting there or not - is their a sensor in the seat back that 'senses' when it is tilted forward?

There is a seat sensor switch, a seat recliner switch and a seat forward switch.

Auto Glide

The Auto Glide:

  • automatically moves the seat forward or rearward when the seat back is tilted forward or rearward.
  • is designed to allow ease of entry into the rear seat.

The system operates as follows:

With the ignition switch OFF, the driver seat Auto Glide will only function when the transmission range selector lever is in NEUTRAL or PARK, the seat is unoccupied and at least one of the vehicle front doors (20124) is open.

With the ignition switch OFF, the passenger seat Auto Glide will only function when the seat is unoccupied and at least one of the vehicle front doors is open.

If the ignition switch is in RUN, Auto-Glide will function with the seat unoccupied.

The seat will stop if the seat back is moved from its forward stop angle while the seat is travelling forward.

The seat will resume its forward travel if the seat back is returned to the forward stop angle position.

The seat will return to the original position if the seat back is returned to its upright position.

The seat will stop immediately if the transmission range selector lever is shifted from NEUTRAL or PARK while the driver seat is moving.

Seat movement will continue if the transmission range selector lever is returned to NEUTRAL or PARK.

The use of the seat regulator control switches will allow movement in any transmission range.

The seat will stop if any seat regulator control switch is momentarily activated (excluding the seat control switch) while the seat is travelling forward.

The seat will return to its former position where the ease of entry cycle was started if the seat back is returned to its upright position.

Move the seat back from its forward stop angle position and return it back to the same to resume forward travel.

Reposition the seat at this time using the seat regulator control switches to cancel the Auto-Glide.

Allow 30 seconds for the seat forward and rearward movement to stop if the ignition switch is off, the seat(s) are unoccupied and the last front door is closed while a seat is moving.

So that little switch on the back of the seat is just to make it move if your not in park?

I've always wondered.

I'm glad it doesn't work of one of the BACK doors are open.

Ok, I have spent some time investigating this. Their is more stuff under these seats than in the engine bay!

I unplugged the sensor that senses if someone is sitting in the seat (ie: if it is occupied or not). Does anybody know if that will send a default signal as to whether the seat is unoccupied or occupied?

No change.

There is a seat sensor switch, a seat recliner switch and a seat forward switch.

Any idea where these switches are located?

I noticed in my Helms book that the recliner/motor assembly is modular and must be replaced as a unit....is the sensor in that?

This is not fun.

Any and all insight/help would be appreciated.

Thanks guys

One person's "modular" is another person's "user serviceable." :)

As for the "not fun" bit, after looking at that photo with the gears, I'll agree with you.

...took everything apart, cleaned all the sensors with electrical contact cleaner and reassembled it hoping to would work. No dice.
