Battery check

Bought a Bosch Battery at PB. Battery built in May 09. Just noticed that it was not starting the car as fast as it had been so I took it back and they tested it. As normal, Battery tested Good.

Test Resluts.

Rated CCA: 770
Volts Prior to test 11.94
Volts under load 12.70
Recovery Volts 12.56

So,.... we opened the caps on the battery and the fluid was really low in each cell. Bought some liquid from them and filled before leaving the test station. Installed battery and came home. Parked car for 3 hrs and now its dead as a door nail will not even turn over the engine. Guy was telling me I had somthing draining my battery to disconnect the terminal and put it back on when I wanted to use the car. Bullshiz. I have a 3 year warranty on this battery and I think they should just give me a new battery.. Any comments?

Go get new battery....after you stick a different charged battery in there and start your car.......
Ya, and they are going to give me a new battery.. This one is still under the 3yr warranty. No reason it should be dead after they charged it, and I let it sit for under 3 hrs. They will do anything they can not to honor a warranty.

Sounds like "you" work for the "MAN"... If that's the case, "they" need to state that in some type of "user required maintenance" statement. Dont you think?

Bud IS the man.:D

Did the guy check your car to see if it was drawing excessive current when the car was off?

Aren't most battery warranties pro-rated? If you're 2 years into a 3 year warranty... hmmm, I dunno that they'll "give" you a new battery.

Unless it's a 100% replacement 3 year warranty.

Just my opinion.

Costco has a 3 year 100% replacement, then 100 month prorated, just picked up one for the Vette and the Lincoln has one already.

No they didnt check the car for excessive current draw when the car was off. No lights are on anywhere. What could be drawing power from the battery when the car is off? As you can tell I am not an electric engineer.

Many, many things in the Mark draw current when your key is in the off position. Any of these having a short will cause excessive current draw from the power source..... Our advice to you, my friend, is to get this done prior to installing a new battery...... If where you purchased your battery doesn't offer this, most any battery shop will do it at little or no charge. ( No pun intended - should have said COST)

Thanks for all your post's Bud. Took the car back to PB's yesterday morning and the Manager and I are "getting to know each other now" after several years of bussiness, and he took the battery back and gave me a brand new one no questions asked, no testing., no pro rata cost out of pocket... nothing. I dont think I have a power draining issue, but hey you never know. With 151k on the car now, things break. Put the new one in and bang! started right up. Car has been sitting now for over 12hrs now, so when I go to work in about 1hr, I should be able to tell if I have a drainage issue. I'm confidant that I just didnt maintain that old one and let the cells dry out and caused a cell to go bad so the thing just couldn't hold a charge anymore..my fault. That will not happen again.

With the battery disconnected, what parts do they test and how for draw from the power source?

You can put a clamp-on ampmeter on the + cable and see any current draw. If more than an amp, start pulling fuses and see what is drawing the current. Somewhat tedious process, but your own labor is cheap!
