I've been looking at the Alpine CDA-9835. Seems like i can get one for around $300.

I'm getting somewhat fed up with My sony CDX Mp 850 since i always have to use the remote.

Or perhaps the Alpine 7998 model, but probably not since i think it looks hideous, in its retracted state and due to the fact that the screen is bigger than the actual headunit.

The one i really like is the Sony CDX-M9900 due to its diplay, but that one sells for more than $400 usually.

I'm also not very sure about the Clarion ProAudio DXZ945MP since i have a feeling that touch screen might break like those panasonic models.

Any input welcome.

RE: Best head unit to get for under $400 or so.

I've got a question - who makes tuner/cd player combinations WITHOUT built-in amps? I'm redoing the stereo in my T-Bird and will be using all component amps so 'would like to find something where I'm not paying for unused built-in amps.

Alpine makes them w/o amps, and offer some of the best SQ for reasonably priced head units. Max, I would go with the alpine head units. With the higher end units, they will all sound great, just find one with the features you want and the look you want.

my alpine has a defeat switch for the amp.

why would u even consider sony with the troubles youre having with this current one? id suggest u go around and talk to people and read reviews about sony's car audio. i have yet to meet one happy customer. sony may make nice home stuff but their car stuff leaves alot to be desired. my vote would be for either alpine or pioneer. if u want the best, go with eclipse or denon, but it'll cost u.

Pioneer makes a few as well. Don't remember the model #s tho.
