BLACK OUT?

RE: BLACK OUT?

Nothing went out here, but my company's stock jumped 9% on opening this morning (we make UPSs and power management stuff) :)

RE: BLACK OUT?

Hi all Glad to see all of you are back and running. We went out with the rest of you , here on Long Island , at first Canada was blamed but then one of the officers of Niagra Falls Power said lightning hit the New York side, and the put out Niagra Power Station ,then the rest of you moochers borrowing power from NY had to shut down because you couldnt meet the demand...We came back on 11:30PM and then off 1:30AM and back on 4:30Am for good , except business still out all day today..They said 60,000,000 people lost power...

RE: BLACK OUT?

I just heard the first joke about the New York power outage...

What did the blind person trapped in the subway say when the power went out?

RE: BLACK OUT?

26 hours in Detroit and I'm just on now. I was driving home - and all the traffic lights went out - then the cell phones were useless.

Everyone's pretty cool about the whole thing. It's really tuff to get gas with all the stations out of power. The ones that are open were warned to hold prices - so all in all it's over with out too much grief.

It's 85 w/100percent humidity in the house and I have about 20 pounds of meat and fish thawed.

It's time for a party!

RE: BLACK OUT?

Power here in my section of Farmingdale (LI, NY) came back at 1:50pm Friday. Some parts of town are still out and don't expect to be back until Saturday afternoon. Have not experienced the rolling blackouts that LIPA warned of.
My area has ALWAYS experienced black outs during summer peaks, so about six years ago I bought a 5000 watt generator. I wired a generator panel which controls six separate circuits (breaker protected) into my main panel box. When my power goes out I run a 240V 20amp jumper cable from the gen. to the panel, flip the switches to "Gen.", fire up the machine, and I'm back in business. The gen. will power a 16,000 btu (120v) ac unit, the fridge, oil burner, some lighting, and TV/SAT/DVD/AMP/etc. circuits simultaneously. The panel has wattage gauges that display power consumption which avoids overloading the generator. 5 gallons of gas lasts about 8-9 hours.
The down side is that the $600 unit the I bought is pretty noisy. If you pay about $300 more you can get the same output a lot quieter. I wish I had done that, felt a bit guilty about the racket it made last night. Felt a lot better when I apologized to my neighbor this morning and he told me... "Hey, don't apologize, if I had one I'd be running it nonstop too, no matter how much noise it made!".
I added the above information because I think that the electrical supply problems are going to get worse here on LI now that connecting the "Cross Sound Power Cable" has been shot down by Conn. it's offered as a possible remedy. BTW, connecting a CPU or any computer controlled item is NOT recommended, as the gen. puts out "dirty" voltage, which could harm them.

greg... i dam wish i had one... i will with my house in PA.... screw the neighboors... if they get mad just invite them into the AC they'll shut up

RE: BLACK OUT?

I was at work in Ypsilanti, Michigan when the power went out at 4:10 p.m. Came back on at my home in Farmington Hills at 2, and back at work at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. All of the areas around Ypsilanti were back on for hours before my bowling center got power again -- we opened around 5:30 and from what I understand, business is great and beer is selling for $10.00 a bottle. Just kidding--no price gouging here. I just hope the air kicked on enough to cool off the building. We kept the air off at home for a good 4 hours until we couldn't take the heat no more--a/c went back on at 8 p.m. and now it's all nice in here. :)

It was 90 today with 85% humidity...fun!

I went to work at 9 a.m. to see what was going on and decided to leave for home at 1 p.m. Half way home it started pouring so hard that I couldn't see ANYTHING, so I sat on the side of the road for 20 minutes or so, and then drove the rest of the way on flooded roads. My a/c must have been flooded as it stopped working--HOT! It finally stopped raining so I opened my windows to cool myself off.

No complaints really -- just lived like the Flintstones for about 22 hours. Makes you realize what you REALLY have.

RE: BLACK OUT?

Looks like we were one of the last in the NY region to get power back. We came on about 6 this evening. I was hearing on the radio how many secions of LI were back on but we were still in the dark long after others were back. We even lost phones at about 2AM but got them back sometime this afternoon.

This was one royal PAIN!

All I can say is though... Thank God for rechargeable flashlights, transistor radios, having at least one ordinary no-bells-and-whistles phone, and gas stoves!

RE: BLACK OUT?

We were out for about 30 hours. I was on my way home on Thursday and all the radio stations went dead. I figured my antenna went out, until i switched back from the CD and the news was on. Went out at about 4 on thursday, came back on at 10 tonight. Threw out a bunch of food.

All in all i can't really bitch. A lot of people had it a lot worse. I have 3 cars, each had about a quarter tank, so i was good there. I had some bottles of water left from chicago, so that helped. And i spent my last $7 on beer. Then i remembered i needed food and took some cans back. I slept on my dads boat (he's out of town in a resort with power) since the boat has a generator, fridge, and stove. Plus a water tank and water heater. So i was all good.
