boiling over

yeah, it happens every once in a while (about every week and a half)... Thats what I've been trying to convey the whole time... I guess i've been miss understood.

It over heats drastically after that though, because it basically looses 1.5 gallons of coolant.
 
A backward installed thermostat will cause the same thing. You may even see the suction hose collapse, due to the water pump vacuum.

I would totally remove the thermostat (actually, what I did was pull the guts out and used the neutered core to make sure it seals on the o-ring OK). AND try another tank cap.
 
+2 on the thermostat problem (sticking or installed backwards). It will over heat as you have no coolant. If you have warped the heads a leak down test should confirm the issue.
