build a motor

So I plan on building a motor for my 94 to do a swap, I DO NOT want to just get a used motor and stick it in. I want to get the proper components new or used and prep for a build. I’m not looking to go wiled and make 600hp or anything like that. First I want a strong, reliable motor since mine has 170k miles on it and I get some milled lifter taping. Second I want to improve the power but maintain some fuel economy. SO THE QUESTION IS what is recommended components and what year components are recommended for this job? From what iv seen on other discussions I’m thinking of getting another mark viii or moch 1 block, 96 cobra crank, may go with cobra or new aftermarket pistons and rods, cobra intake cobra exhaust manifolds but do not know about heads or cams (what flows better mark viii or cobra) Is there any particular year mark that has more good components on it to get uses and rebuild. I’m looking for subjections I want to take my time, build it once and right. I’m not going to take the cheep way out but don’t want to blow money ether.

You're blowing money if you plan on making less than 600hp.

Put in a Cobra engine, KB or Vortech blower, and you're done.

rebuilding a modular motor is not for a novice.
no offfence implied about your mechanical skills.

But I have assembled many ford engines from scratch.
many 5.0's and a few 2.3's for my turbo project.

With my level of experience I would not take the heads off of a modular motor.
not to mention the specialized tools that are required for the job.

Either pay someone to build one.. or put an already assembled engine in.
If you pay someone to build one, they will know what parts to use.
If you put an already assembled engine in they will know what parts to use.

mod motors are not for "budding engine builders" nor even "moderately experienced engine builders".
They require specialized knowledge and specialized tools.

I have been very happy with a new 04 engine and a Cobra intake. Very affordable swap, little effort and its a very nice street setup. Great economy too. With a tune I am getting 30+ @65MPH. City is 18+ but the cold winter season really impact city driving, I am very sure I am not getting 18 now.

rpm's that engine makes with your config? as i remember that is a three valve per cylinder powerplant. thanks

The shop dyno my mark at spcializes in cobras there web page is in my signature. If you are serious about a chapter here in dallas get in touch with me i have 3 members already. if not i understand.

Its a 4 valve. Only the SOHC were three valve, all DOHC are 4 valve. RPMs it "makes"? Same as any other 4.6l, 7 to 8k but the chip pulls it back to 6.2k, the peak RPM before fall out.

is there much difference between an 04 and 98 engine

would one get similar results with any year dohc motor and a cobra intake?

Depends on the year. 03/04 have C heads. Earlier 4.6L have B. Therefore only certain Cobra intakes are compatible for certain years. As with most designs, the later years are usually better. Thats not the case with the 97/98 Mark intake compared to 93 to 96 though. But generally it is. An 03/04 block with a Mach 1 intake would work VERY well.

There is an article I read a while back saying the 03/04 was the ideal starting point for a decent build for street. It was one of many reasons I went with a new 04 versus the easy way out of just putting in another Mark engine when I blew mine up.

here is a 1000hp daily driver engine they built ina cobra

UMMMM something tells me that the two motors my be just a little out of budget and my MPG might just might go down ever so slightly.

Just an example of what they can do. It's way out of my budget. lol i can handle the mpg 2 miles to work. Are you still interested in a local chapter?

93-98 4.6 DOHC engines had B-headed set ups,99-04 had C-headed set ups but 03-04 heads are better than 99-01.All 93-04 cars with 4.6 Dohc engines came with aluminum blocks ,except 03-04 Cobras.03-04 Cobras are the only 4.6 Dohc cars that came with Iron blocks and forged cranks, forged rods, forged pistons ,also the blocks were around 70 lbs heavier than aluminium ones. All 4.6 dohc cars with manual transmissions came with forged cranks, all 4.6 Dohc cars with auto trans came with non forged cast cranks.Continentals had 4.6 Dohc engine but they are useless because they put power down to wrong wheels:D

I'm thinking of getting another 93-95 mark motor for tare down have the block prepped get new cobra crank and pistons, send heads out for rebuild with the SVT cam kit that comes with everything you need for the heads (4 cams 32valves, 32springs, 32rockers, etc $1700 ). Since I really don’t see getting a blower or turbo staying with the first gen intake. BUT if I came across a 96-cobra motor for good price id get it and just freshen it up before the swap.
