Buying a car out of state

What are some issues when buying an out of sate vehicle? I live in California and have found some great deals on cars but I'm not sure if it will be a hassle to buy out of state. Do all Mark viii's have the same emissions since the are all manufactured by Lincoln or are the set up for the individual state that they are to be sold in? Any help would be appreciated.

They all have the same emissions.

When I bought the '91 LSC from Ohio, I executed a Bill of Sale and had the title signed over to me. I used a set of WV tags from another vehicle for transport back home. My insurance company was notified prior to.

When I bought the '96 from CA, again the insurance company was notified, the title signed over and I used the tags on the car. WV law allows use of the 'old tags' for 10 days when buying a vehicle.

I would research the CA DOT regs.

FWIW, all these cars have the same emissions systems, "when created". Since these cars are older and may have had several owners, the original system may have been modified. A number of states require no emissions inspection for annual registration, so removal or gutting of the cats is no problem. Some states require inspections less than annually or only in certain counties. Unless you understand the condition of the system and know the requirements of the state in which you want to title the car, you may run into issues.

PS You can't require the seller of the car to comply with emissions regulations implemented and enforced in another state.

Not sure on laws in other states, but if they're anything like MI, DO NOT use tags from another vehicle to drive a new purchase home. Drive it without plates, and carry the title or bill of sale with you. In MI you are allowed to drive a vehicle home after purchasing it without any registration... but you have to be going home and you have to have proof (usually a signed and dated title, or a bill of sale). It's a misdemeanor to use tags off another vehicle (potentially 30 days in the clink, i think). Even if they cite you for not having tags, it's not as serious an offense as driving with tags off another vehicle.
