caliper dust shields

I had the rear rotors and pads changed on my 96 recently and the shop said the dust shields/caps were missing from the rear calipers.

I meant to say the rear caliper dust boots aka dust shields. The shop recommended replacing the rear calipers but if I can just get the dust boots/shields that would be cheaper.

I don't see why they will keep you from buying calipers if they are bad tho....If just the shields are missing, don't worry about it. Anyone know why you HAVE to have the shields?

This is odd... first of all why would you need to replace the calipers? Are they bad? Malfunctioning?

Secondly the calipers and boots aren't mutually exclusive, if you "need" calipers for some reason you can't just get the boots instead and be all set.

The boots aren't all that important, they just keep down brake dust which isn't all that much of an issue on the rears anyway.

No, the rear calipers are fine the boots are just missing from the rears for some reason. They told me that you can't get the boots separate and that's why they said I need new rear calipers.

i'm very confused about these boots.

Are you talking about the rubber on the piston part of the caliper?

Here's a photo of the caliper pin boots from the front caliper. Are these what you are talking about?

If so, they are available separate.

I think what Bud was referring to was the metal "splash shields" riveted to the knuckle on the back side of the rotor.

Splash Shield

A splash shield attached to the rear knuckle protects the rotor inboard surface from road splash contaminants. The wheel guards the outboard surface of the rotor. The splash shield is common for right and left hand.

There is a rubber boot for the caliper piston. It keeps dirt and contaminants from the piston. I do not know if it is available separate, but they do come with caliper rebuild kits.

What Leo said: "The boots aren't all that important, they just keep down brake dust which isn't all that much of an issue on the rears anyway".

Tell you mechanic to forget about the shields...there are just trying to run your costs up!

rear caliper dust shields?

dust shields/caps were missing from the rear calipers.

rear caliper dust boots aka dust shields.
(FYI, the aka doesn't work here, there aren't dust boots that are also called dust shields, boots being rubber, shields being metal)

rear calipers are fine the boots are just missing

Ok....obviously you don't know what they called them, hehe. I think for us to help you properly, you need to call the shop, ask them what they called the parts(probably wrong terminology anyways) and we'll go from there. Also....I know that pictures aren't going to help you because your parts are "missing", haha, but here you go.

CALIPER SLIDE PIN DUST BOOT(as stated above, purchaseable seperate)

If you need the shields......I removed mine on my car when I did the hub swap to allow the rotors to breath better, so I can mail you mine, but I HIGHLY doubt they are talking about these.

I'm going to disagree with you here.....if the caliper can't slide properly due to debris on a slide pin, you're going to have wear/driveability problems caused by the missing dust boots. Ask logres :)

J, I think both Leo and myself are thinking that they ARE talking about the dust shield ( the same ones you removed from your rear calipers). I said riveted because MY repair CD says they are. If bolted on, all the better. I assume (dumb, I know) that someone in that vehicles past removed them, same as you.

When I read Serge's very FIRST post....I thought to myself, "I got my old ones if he really "needs" them!" After that it all when downhill, I was just as confused as you guys...shields/boots/caps wtf is going on? Lol!

I'm with you though.....its not likely that ALL FOUR slide pin boots are missing, but on the other hand...why try and sell him new calipers if the dust shields are missing? You'd think they'd sell him rear spindles, lol.
