I need a new right rear caliper... do I need to get oem or can I get something like the A-1 Cardonne for cheaper with the same performance?

Cardonne is a good supplier, of coarse it is rebuilt so you need to turn in your old unit. If you need one side, you probably ought to order the other side as it is customary for these items to be done in pairs for functional purposes. Also good time to chabge out old brake fluid.

Unless there is a specific malfunction on one caliper, it is better to replace calipers in pairs. Why did you need one?

Why is it better to replace both of them? Essentially they are stand alone units but feed off the same brake line. I don't know how to explain what I'm getting at...but it sounds like you're talking about that "rule of thumb" if you change one change them both. Kinda like when dealers/mechanics try to sell you two rotors if you only need one. Ya know?

In a lot of cases, the malfunctioning of the "good" side is not far behind the defunct side. With rotors, it is easy to tell how much you've got left. With calipers, there are no outward clues.

Just get the rebuilt. I would just change the bad one and do a good brake job while in there with the saved cash. Also a good time to change the brake fluid just dont forget to bleed the system well.

Yeah...you're probably right Wayne, but I don't see throwing that kind of money "away" if the car doesn't have a ton of miles. I guess it depends on the car.

Usually, if a vehicle is in need of a caliper, it is because it is sticking. A sticking caliper is usually due to age/use. Since both calipers are likely the same age and have been used the same, the 2nd caliper is likely not far behind as far as a sticking failure.

Conversely, if you damage a caliper during service for whatever reason, it is perfectly acceptable to replace a single caliper.

Unlike calipers, rotors can be physically checked for defects and conformity to specs. The calipers don't necessarily care if one rotor is a few thousandths thinner than the other. Rotors can be resurfaced or replaced individually or in pairs under virtually any circumstance.
