Calling for HDTV/HDDVR gurus

My setup:

DirecTV HDDVR + 50" Sony SXRD LCOS HDTV

My issue:

HDMI from HDDVR to HDTV not coming in.

I called Sony and they said that DirecTV needs to activate the HDMI circuitry in the HDDVR. The Composite leads work just fine.

I called DirecTV and they said that "apparently" the HDDVR and HDTV are not compatible through HDMI cabling. They also claim that Composite connection is just as good of quality as the HDMI connection. Sony says HDMI is better than composite.

Someone is full of IT and I'd just like for someone out here to let me know who it is. I'm guessing DirecTV.

You don't need to be a guru to know HDMI is superior to composite signals.

DirecTV is supposedly on the list of HDMI supporters.

I have a Sony HDTV Wega and the Direct TV TiVo HD DVR, the HDMI works just fine.

Same as mine, so it should work.

I knew DirecTV was inept. I'll be giving them an earful tomorrow.

Btw, did you have to use a SMARTCard Steve? Any tips on getting my HDMI connection to work?

No trick, just plug it in and just set the TV to that video input. All the direct TV tuners need that card.

And of course the DirecTV people neglect to mention that...

Thanks Steve. :)

RE: Calling for HDTV/HDDVR gurus

I think someone may have gotten composite mixed up with "component"...

As for your other issue, I know my comcast HDTV box will disable it's digital outs when it senses a recording device is present (computer, DVR, etc.) At least that is what the rep told me. He said it is made this way to prevent piracy. You may have the "latest and greatest" box with the latest and greatest copy protection scheme.:( Just an idea...

You can purchase cards that will tune HD signals through your PC. You can then use your PC as a DVR if you want to go through the hassle. Bottom line is how important is it to you?

You're right about the "component" "composite" mixup. My goof there.

As for the copy protection, my satelite receiver and HDDVR are all one box from DirecTV, so that shouldn't be an issue.

RE: Calling for HDTV/HDDVR gurus

Just wanted to update this to inform anyone reading that the Comcast rep was BSing...

If you have a Comcast issued Motorola DCT6412 DVR, it is possible to capture HDTV off the DVR complete with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround. It takes a bit of reading and some effort but it'll be well worth it. I no longer have to worry about how I'm gonna fit 24 Episodes of 24 on my DVR. :)
