Canton Windage Tray

What's the deal with this? It doesn't fit the stock Gen 1 MK8 pan because of the extensive scrapers in the MK8 pan. If I take out/ bend the MK8 pan scrapers, the Canton will be very far from the crank, and likely the screen will hit the bottom front of the pan anyway. I'm thinking I have to cut the Canton apart, and weld in some brackets to move the screen up to the crank. Anyone try to install a Canton Tray in a MK8, or did I buy a piece of junk that won't fit as advertised? Maybe the '96-'98 Cobra pan is way different? Anybody know what the problem is? I guess I'm the guinea pig again.

Thanks...

RE: Canton Windage Tray

I think Ponyfreak had one but used his own homemade oilpan.

RE: Canton Windage Tray

Without significant rework the Canton part #20-939 windage tray, it will NOT fit a MK8 Oil Pan. The stock MK8 pan has some fairly well placed scrapers that are much closer to the crank than the Canton screen would be. There is about 1" discrepency.. the Canton screen hits the stock scrapers. There may be a way to cut and re-weld the screen 1" higher so that the oil pan flange fits, but not worth the effort. It would appear that the Cobra pan is deeper (if this part fits a Cobra pan?)and doesn't have these scrapers. Regardless, don't buy this part for a MK8, it a complete waste of money, plus the stock pan (with scrapers) looks darned good. I also bought a T-Bird 2V pan for comparison. It doesn't have the kick out for more oil capacity, but has the same scrapers installed. Looks identical, but I didn't do a fit check to the Gen 1 4V aluminum block. Short story is don't bother with Canton.. they DON'T fit as advertised, plus stock is obviously better (Scrapers are 1" closer to crank). The guinea pig looses again.

RE: Canton Windage Tray

I'm running one, but yes the rear two baffles have to be cut and ground down out of the stock Mark VIII pan to make it fit. I have pics of mine after i did the mod, but not on home computer right now.

RE: Canton Windage Tray

Sierra is correct, it will work if you spend 40 minutes modifying your pan. YOu have to cut the front two scrapers off and also cut the excess sheet metal piece off of the oil pickup tube. After you do this it will work. Those scrapers are totally useless once you have the windage tray in there.

Tip: you have to cut the scrapers out, bending them down will not do the job. AND NEVER modify the windage tray no matter what anyone says.

RE: Canton Windage Tray

And yes the cobra pan is a lot deeper in the front, and in the rear. The mark VIII pan was made like it is to lower the engine to clear the hood and fit in snug with the K member.

RE: Canton Windage Tray

I decided to leave it out.. and use the stock unmodified pan. With the canton screen so far from the crank, just doesn't look like it does anything. The one I got is probably a universal modular fit (including a 5.4 stroker). If my engine blows up someday, I might modify the screen to fit closer to the crank or better yet, just buy the raw screen from canton ($35), and weld it into the stock pan.

RE: Canton Windage Tray

Can someone explain to me exactly what the windage tray does?

RE: Canton Windage Tray

The windage tray keeps the windage, a vacuum like updraft created from the rotating mass (crank, rods) from sucking up the oil in the pan and creating parasitic losses. It is a very helpful piece of metal. My suggestion is to run a stud girdle and a windage tray. The girdle is a perfect "scraper" as it should be .050 from the crank.
