Check Oil Message

My car indicates "change oil soon", however I did an oil change not too long ago approx 1500 miles. I was wondering what triggers this message? Does the mechanic have to reset this somehow or do I really need an oil change?

You have to reset it every time you change your oil... depending on what year mark you have there are different procedures.

For a gen 1 (93-96) hold the oil change reset button for 10 sec.
For a gen 2 (97-98) browse until you see the oil life % and hit reset.
 
The mechanics never reset it for you unless you tell them to. You can reset it now but since you already have 1500 miles on the oil it won't be accurate. If you still want to go by the message center I would change out the oil when it says around 25% left.
 
Just reset it now. You have the "reminder sticker" on the windshield. Then after next change, reset it again. This way the dang message center quits telling you to change your oil every time you start your car.
