Checking back in after being MIA for a few months.

I have been MIA here fore the past few months. I have had a lot going on, as Joe (badsax) and Sharon (Trixie) know.

First, I am going to be a father. It is a boy, baby Ariston is due to arrive on 9/17/10 :D

When I found out I was going to be a father back in January I decided to look for a house. I wanted to move away from the NYC area. Looking for a house has been like having a 2nd full time job so that is why I have not been around on here.

Currently I live in a 2 family home and rent a 2nd floor apartment from my grandmother who lives on the first floor. I asked grandma if she wanted to move with us and she said no. So at first I was just looking for a home for my wife Aimee and our new baby. We found a home and put an offer on it, but the owner would not come down so we walked.

So now after that grandma reconsidered and wanted to move with us. She realized she could not afford maintain the home on her own and also be a landlord to strangers. So the search had to start all over again because I needed a home that had a room and full bath on the first floor for grandma since she can’t do stairs.

So I found a home to fit our needs about an hour away from where i live now(see photo below). But then some things came out of the home inspection. So a long battled ensued with the sellers but in the end after I said I was walking away they agreed to fix everything.:)

I have a tentative closing date of June 3rd, so with that date and the expense of moving to new home I won’t be making it to Carlisle this year. I just canceled my reservation at the comfort suits. :frown:

Congratulations on the baby, and the house, Steve! The house looks great!
Sorry to hear you won't be making it to the show though. I'll have a beer in your honor.

Thanks, the new house will be a bit closer to Carlisle too, 180 miles vs 155 miles. Maybe 2 1/2 hours drive with no traffic but i still won't be able to make it. :(
Right after the closing i have a lot of work to do before moving in. Like take down all the old people country wallpaper and paint. Also want a guy to come in and refinish the hard wood floors.

Congrats Steve! Hopefully it has a least a 2 car garage?

Yes attached under the home, but it is small with support columns down the middle, I do have the land to build detached garage/shop when I can afford too.

Steve, after just having done much of the same work myself, I do not envy the work you have ahead of you. I had to steam off 2-5 layers of wallpaper No fun at all. tearing down the plaster, and replacing it with sheetrock may actually have been less work. I borrowed one of these from my sister. it's slow, but it works pretty well: http://www.amazon.com/Wagner-Products-282018-1-Gallon-Wallpaper/dp/B0009XEL4O

As for the floors, I paid a guy $1800 to refinish all of my main-floor hardwood. it was worth every penny. I doubt he'd be interested in driving to your neck of the woods though..

Right now I talked with a guy in the area recommended by a friend who does handyman work, he is retired shop teacher. He will help with the wallpaper tare down and painting.
I just called a wood floor guy today and left a message, he recommended by the same friend.

Now the issue will be to get those guys coordinated before I have to move the furniture in to make things easy. I will have like two weeks to get that work done before i have to vacate my current place and start moving in. Some rooms have carpet, I don't know the shape the floors are in. I hope they are in the same shape as what is exposed as shown in the foyer, then I think they just need to be screened and coated.

The wood appears to be in very good shape. It should clean up well. Not to take over your thread, but for reference, you can see the before and after photos of mine here: http://www.tixer.net/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=album146

In my case, I overlapped the move by a month. I did wallpaper and painting first, then the floors. figuring I could be a bit sloppy with the paint. that process worked very well for me, but I cut it pretty close on the schedule, and luckilly, the floor guy was dedicated. He applied the final coat of poly on Thanksgiving day!

Steve, I know it's a lot, but maybe you two could come out for the banquet at least? A little break to celebrate your new home? Yeah, I'm pitiful.

Thanks, it just reaffirms my decision to get them done before i move in.

I would like to have more time but the guy buying my grandmothers house want to close before June 30th to get the $8k rebate. Since most people will be trying to close that week just before the 4th of July weekend we had to move the date to the week before.

I am not even sure if Aimee has work that day. It is going to be too crazy to come out :(
