chip, sct X2 tuner and CE code readers???

I'm a little confused about these items.
My 98 just threw the CE light. I wanted to buy a code reader so I could fix the CE light, but with so many readers out there I'm not sure which one to buy. Which company would you guys suggest when purchasing a code reader?

I was going to buy a chip and then I noticed Mike's SCT X2 flash tuner  . I looked it up and it seems to do everything the chip does and more. Gears and a different wheel diameter are my only mods for now so I figured I would buy the X2 tuner and update the tune as I mod my way into LOW 13's, LOL. Plus, I read the X2 reads codes so I would take care of the chip and code reader in one purchase. I have read about the tuner but I'm still confused on how it works. Do I need a chip first and then the tuner allows me to flash or burn the chip as I up date mods? Can someone please explain this X2 tuner to me?

RE: chip, sct X2 tuner and CE code readers???

Just a thought. If all you really want a reader for is for the CE light all you need to do is go to your local Advance Auto Parts Store of similar. They all have readers that they use that can also erase the stored code to shut your light off, same as disconnecting your battery cables. Best part is it's Free. Now if your going to get real serious and need to start changing around alot of perameters, and do alot of fine tuning, datalogging, and reflashing your best source will be SCT. There are several well respected dealers of their products that have been mentioned in the past on this board.
By the way the readers we use at Advance can be bought for about $100.00

You can go to most any auto parts store and they will read you CEL for you.

As of the XCal 2, If you are buying a used one from someone, make sure they have returned the vehicle they used it on back to stock. If they don't the device will be VIN locked to that vehicle and it will be of no use to you except for a CEL read/clear device and data logger. I can clear the VIN lock but it's $200 just for that plus shipping. It has to sent back to SCT and this is what they charge.

The reason behind this is that there's a lot of people that will buy the XCal 2, program their vehicle and then sell it on Ebay to get their money back and a free performance program.

If the device is usable you can download the software needed to clear the VIN yourself if you received the cable with it. Then you will need to order a program built for your vehicle and EEC code. Or you can send it in to be reprogrammed.

If you decide not to send it in you can receive the new program through email as long as you have the download cable for it.

You need to decide what setup you want to go with also. There's the ODA or On Device Adjustments where you can make your own minor changes to the program installed with the key pad.

Or you can go with the Extreme Tuner software that requires you to use a PC or lap top to make the changes in the program, save it, then download it into the device before you can reflash the vehicle to the new settings.

Here's an example of the two programs, http://www.blueovalchips.com/paramadjust.php

The wheel speed is taken from the front abs sensor not the trans speedo gear so the xcal2 wont change it. this is for rear end gear swaps and tire sizes, (on my 97 Mark anyways) I believe the 96 has OBD2 as well, check if this is the case for yours.
