Choosing the right stall converer

Hello all,

While I have the engine lowered during a header install, I figured it was the best time to change the Torque Converter.

I have a tranny cooler w/1-2 upgrade, MMX shaft and plan on 3.73's & a Bauman shift kit in the very near future.

According to the TCCOA tranny article: "Under ideal circumstances you should select a converter that stalls approx 700 rpm below peak torque".

At approx. what RPM's would a 96 w/3.73's, headers, 2.5 exhaust reach peak torque?

I definitely do not want to lower the life expectancy of the trac-loc rear and tranny by going with a SC that is too high.

Thanks in advance!

RE: Choosing the right stall converer

I have a 3200 stall. I would suggest something in the 3200-3500 range. I've never heard of someone complaining their stall was too high, but many, many people wish they got a higher stall.

Precision Industries makes good torque converters, and they come with one free stall change. There was another brand, i believe edge, that some people were trying out, but i haven't heard much about them yet.

RE: Choosing the right stall converer

I'm running a 3000 stall converter with 3.73 gears and am happy with it. Do not buy from Pro-Torque. They gave me very poor service. I think peak torque for stock Mark VIII's is around 5,500 rpm's. My converter cost $700+.

I like my PI 3200. With the 3200 and headers I dropped from 14.2 to 13.6 in the 1/4.

Yank converters stink like monkeys, PI industries is a "OK" converter in my book. But they are one of the more inefficent converters, and the 2 that i have owned wherent exactly streetable, even at 3500 stall. The converter THAT I LOVE. is Made by a small company called TCS, i had the converter for about 9 months, i loved it, untill it broke. And tcs went out of business so no luck there. I just got a New PI vigalante triple disc converter, and i let PI know that i want it tight as a virgin on prom night. I will find out soon if they where able to do that.

I'm shopping for a converter too, 3200 sounds like the ticket. The jury seems to favor the PI, but thought I'd give Edge a try. I wasn't aware that the PI was inefficient. Edge claims similar (maybe even better) specs than the PI, and is a tad cheaper. Not sure they're selling the 9.5" Street Edge for the 4R70W just yet, apparently they were upgrading the lock up clutch. I do like PI's billet front cover, which Edge doesn't claim to have. Anyone out there tried Edge yet? I'm buying in about a month.
