Like most of you guys here, I am finally removing the beauty covers from the motor, as much as I am tweeking and fooling the car lately they are a PIA. but the motor is very dirty, Dust and grime,I just want to clean it up, How do you guys do it without taking it to a detail shop? My car wash has a engine degreaser, cleaner but I am worried about getting the coil packs wet....do you guys throw a plastic sack over them and spray away, I do not want any problems, thanks for the help!

RE: cleaning the engine

The only thing I can tell you is to start the car right after you are done and let it run till the engine is dry. I also spray WD-40 on the electrical connections before I start the car to chase the water out of the connections. I would be more concerned with protecting the alternator than the coil packs.

RE: cleaning the engine

I've taken a hose to everything under there with no problem. Watch out for getting water in the spark plug holes though, that can cause a miss for awhile until it dries up.

Spray everything down with simple green automotive, and let it soak for a few minutes. Then hose it down. Whatever you can reach, wipe down. I also spray all the plastic with WD-40 and wipe it down, it gives it a nice shine.

RE: cleaning the engine

I think Sandy uses "Pledge" but my choice is definately "SIMPLE GREEN". It's magic - and it lasts through icky Michigan winters.

RE: cleaning the engine

I use Simple Green also. If you clean your engine on a regular basis it's easy to keep it clean.

RE: cleaning the engine

yup==simple green use that--u can do a wet clean or a dry clean==wet is obviously using water and getting the whole engine wet--if u do this do it at a car wash place since alot of grime greese and dirt is gonna come off ir engine-not something u want in and stainin ur driveway wet then apply the simple green then if needed use a brush or rag to get in deep then rinse off ur probably gonna wanna dry the engine with rags or what not so its not all water spotted up then regreese the belts with wd40-ur best method is probably to do a really good wet clean than maintain it sparadically with a quick dry clean--the dry way is to get a bunch of rags and basically use the squirt bottle of simple green squirting then wiping the dirt off--dont use any polish or shine under the hood because it will stink when ur engine gets hot and puts more greese and crap under the hood---just get it clean and it should look good---if u really want to get into it u can get a flat or low gloss black spray paint or whatever color and finish it off by painting the plastic pieces and big hoses and such---also when u do this u can hit ur wheel weels up with a coat of black paint--it makes a difference-cleaner look--then hit ur wiper arms up if ur getting into the whole painting thing--doesnt take too long believe it or not---

RE: cleaning the engine

you shouldn't need to "regrease your belts". You don't really want the belt greased...

RE: cleaning the engine

Better than Simple Green is Orange Blast, the stuff is absolutely amazing. First give the engine a good cleaning using comprtessed air to remove any loose particles. Then a light spraying a section at a time from the top with Orange Blast then a light water spray to rinse. You'll need to repeat the job several times over but once ther engine is clean you can keep it that way by doing a monthly cleaning with a spray of Orange Blast and wiping with a wet cloth. Use Q-tips and such for hard to reach places.

Clean and polish plastic parts with a plastic cleaner such as Lexol.

With enough patience you will have a sparkling engine.

RE: cleaning the engine

well not re-grease per say because you cant really do that with wd-40 but saturate and lubricate the belts so they dont squell and make rough sounds while spinning--after using de-greasers its common for the belts to make noises so a shot of wd40 usually takes care of this without making a big mess

RE: cleaning the engine

I have a couple of methods to get some of the excess water off. I use either my compressor hose to blow dry off the motor before startup or I take my all time favirite "NASCAR APPROVED LEAF BLOWER" down to the car wash with me on the really nasty clean ups. I also use it on the out side odf the car also to get all that trapped water ouy of the nooks and crannies. If you use some common sense when you are washing her down you should be fine.
