cobra intake manifold

I have a few questions about installing a 97 Cobra intake manifold on my 98 LSC.

Can I use my following stock parts:
IMRC controller and plastic IMRC's
fuel rails
throttle body cable

Here is a list of stuff that Aric and Ryan ordered for my 96-98 Cobra intake swap. I believe he said he was going to use the IMRC's and fuel rails from the stock Mark motor. Not sure about a new cable though. I guess he is waiting until it is on the car first to see if they will be long enough. These are FOMOCO part numbers:

F6ZZ9728BC - Bracket for throttle cable/cruise cont. on 96-98 Mustang Cobra

XR3Z6C324A - PCV Hose assembly for 96-98 Mustang Cobra

F6ZZ9D477D - EGR Tube for 96-98 Mustang Cobra

F7LZ9461AA - Lower Intake gaskets for 96-98 Mustang Cobra (sold ea) Below IMRC's

F6ZZ9H486C - Intake gaskets for 96-98 Mustang Cobra (sold ea) Above IMRC's

lol I dunno. That is the list of stuff off one of the many invoices I already paid for :) That stuff is currently on my growing parts shelf at Aric's, along with a real purdy polished ACCUFAB single blade throttle body just waiting to go on the car when he assembles the new motor. I will ask him and let you know.

46callaway-

You can reuse the stock IMRC controller and leave it mounted where it is now. No need to change anything about that. When you take everything apart, you will need to detach the cables from the cams on the end of each IMRC to make it possible to remove them. While they're out, I recommend strongly that you clean them thoroughly as there will be a pretty thick coat of carbon grime, especially in the secondary runner.

You can reuse the stock fuel rails but be aware that you will not be able to install the EGR valve. I purchased and used an EGR block off plate from UPR products. The pressure regulator on that side of the engine will pretty much rub up against the EGR "ear" on the Cobra upper manifold. I used a pipe cap to seal off the end of the EGR tube, though you may want to either clamp and braze it shut or remove it from the exhaust manifold altogether and cap it down there.

As for the throttle cable bracket, I basically modified the stock one to work and have left it like that. It's pretty much impossible to describe in words how to modify it.

I did reuse the stock TPS and IAC. You'll be using your stock throttle body, just flipped over. The IAC will bolt right on as well, though I experienced an RPM surge at startup that Lonnie was able to somewhat tune out...he said that a Cobra IAC is slightly different and would be another cure for that issue.

PM me your email address and I'll shoot you some pictures of the bracket, hose routing, etc. etc. I wrote up a pretty long post on the "other" forum and will send that in the email as well.

hey dom would you mind sending me the same pm please!?? i have a cobra intake setting in my garage just waiting to go on. im not trying to thread jack here but when you block off the EGR doesn't it set a code in the ECU? i know you can get a tune to get rid of the EGR but is there a way to keep the light off with out a tune?

Without a tune the only thing you can do is unplug the light! If your car needs to pass inspection it will fail the OBD2 test without a tune.

i have a 1st gen with ODB1 and i live in florida where they dont do inspections. umm i mean no my cats are not punched out lol

As Eric said above, blocking off the EGR system without first having it shut off in an aftermarket engine tune will result in the car eventually activating the "Check Engine" light and recording a trouble code; this condition alone will cause you to fail inspection in states with emissions requirements, nevermind the fact that it would fail a visual inspection of the engine compartment if the inspector knows what to look for. I had my Cobra manifold installed for about 2 weeks before it finally activated the CEL and threw a code.

It was at that point that Lonnie of Blue Oval Chips took care of me with a custom tune for this setup, which included shutting off the EGR. It really is amazing how much cleaner the throttle body/intake manifold stays without the EGR system trying to recycle all that garbage carbon. I got my Mark inspected shortly after uploading the tune file and clearing the trouble code. On my emissions inspection sheet, it simply shows "N/A" for the EGR system status :D

I'll send that PM to you shortly, 7 sek mark.

46callaway, did you receive that email?

Sorry to threadjack but.. My shop just called and said the hood won't close now that the Cobra intake has been installed on my 98 CE....Any ideas?
Does the hoodliner have to come off? Any cutting needed?

If your intake looks like the one in the attached photo, it should close with no modification to the gen 2 hood other than the bracket for the engine compartment light that 98's never got anyway, modified/bent up like in the photo.

Thanks Mike!... that's the manifold I have. They say that even with the hood liner off, it still won't close. They seem to think it's the bracing on the hood that is the issue. This is the original hood and it's a 98 Cobra manifold.

Yea I've never heard of the cobra intake not fitting underneath the stock gen 2 hood... gen 1 you need to do some modifications to fit underneath the stock hood.

I've decided to sell my 98 cobra intake, if anyone wants it PM me. I need to be able to pass smog and I really won't be able to very easily with the intake on the car. Swapping back to the stock intake would be a major hassle. I could use the money to make the car faster using smog legal parts like a high stall converter...

Can something be done with the EGR by using anything from the Cobra? Would the cobra egr tube be routed differently that would allow the egr to be used?
