code 628

I finally got my car off the boat, and once I pull onto the freeway, I have no 3rd gear! I ran the codes and got 628, which is converter clutch slippage. It did not do this before I shipped it off, it sat for a month and only had 1 mile added to it (I kept track) while it was in transit. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd rather not buy a new tranny, and I dont wanna do the 1-2 upgrade if I'm just gonna throw this tranny away. On a positive note, I fixed code 332, I found a cracked vacuum line (one of the hard plastic ones) and simply put some rubber vacuum hose in the middle and it friggin works!! Please help with my newest problem!!!

RE: code 628

I'll try to help. DTC 628 is a continuous memory code which means it will be in memory even with the fault removed. So I wouldn't put too much credence in that, yet.

This concern is ONLY for vehicles with Ford Quality Remanufactured (FQR) 4R70W Transmission Exchange Units With Julian build dates between 062-97 And 04099 (corresponding serial numbers are between R0475797 and R0771887).

ISSUE
A delayed or no 2-3 upshift, primarily when the transmission is cold, may be evident on some vehicles In some cases, Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0782 may also be present. This may be caused by fluid pressure leakage past the larger diameter seal of the 2-3 accumulator.

ACTION
Replace the 2-3 accumulator piston using a revised piston. The revised piston will increase seal/bore interference, eliminating any internal leak relating to the 2-3 accumulator piston reducing the possibility of 2-3 upshift concerns. Refer to the appropriate Service or Workshop Manual for replacement procedure.

Do not panic. At this time I would disconnect the battery to clear the codes, check all grounds and in particular check the transmission harness. You may opt for a fluid flush on the chance that a spool is stuck, but I surmise the problem to be an intermittent electrical malfunction.

RE: code 628

I did a tranny filter, the fluid was pretty bad, and I will try to clear the codes out. By performing the tranny mod that I see on the tccoa site, would that fix this problem? I cant remember if the 2-3 accumulator was replaced in this mod. Thanks for the help.

RE: code 628

No mod will fix a mechanical problem. For instance, if the direct clutch was toast, no accumulator replacement will make a difference. My case for an intermittent electrical fault was due to the fact you stated it went unexpectedly with no prior symptoms. Read the transmissions 101 article on TCCOA.

RE: code 628

So after the tranny filter it's still doing it. Maybe if I relate all that happened someone might be able to help. I got it off the boat, and it drove fine for about 3 miles, then as I was accelerating uphill, I turned the trac control off and it went thru a few gears randomly, then it felt like there was no transmission. Since I've done the tranny filter it's the same, but I notice that if I take O/D off, it will stay in 2nd if I'm over 30 mph, when I have O/D on, it will just wrap up at 30 MPH (the rpm's go up, but no gear). I'm at a loss, and I asked the local Ford dealer how much for a diagnosis, and since the transmission has to be disassembled, it's gonna cost $500.00 at least, just to tell me what's wrong. Things are SOOOO expensive here in Hawaii. Any suggestions? Oh, and to add insult to injury, I found out that an employee at some place I've been to used my Credit Card to make calls, and charged over $280 on my card. PROTECT YOUR #'s!!!!
