Cold start Idle

My '94 Mark has developed a cold idle problem in sunny Florida. it will stall if I don't keep the RPMS above 850-900. After 5 to 8 minutes it's good to go and runs fine. I'm OLD SCHOOL pre 70s, If it were a carbed motor I might know what to do but this has me stumped.

You need to replace the IACV (Idle Air Control Valve.) It's on the back of the motor, passenger's side. It's an 8 out of 10 on the PITA meter to replace. I've found it easier going to remove the plastic bezel (under the windshield wipers) and then disconnect the fuel lines going to the fuel rails, so that you can move them out of the way. The last time I did it, I also removed the throttle body and that gives shade tree mechanics with large hands enough room to just barely reach the two screws to replace it.

It still takes copious amounts of USMC magic words.

Be careful you don't get in a hurry to finish the job and use a wrench to screw in/start the bolts. The bolts are easily cross treaded. Start them with your fingers and use a wrench ONLY after you know you have good tread contact.

thanks, I knew it wouldn't be something easy. My hands won't work for this fix with R. Arthritis and other crap so I will have to inlist the help of my son if I can get him away from the video games. Thanks again! MM

It's a shame this common failure is such a pain on the Mark. On other 4.6 V8s from this era it is a very simple 5 minute job, as easy as changing an air filter.

Yep. On my wife's 2002, the IACV is easy to get to. But The serpentine belt is a 6 on the PITA meter. Replacing the oil adapter plate requires you to lift up the motor 4 inches to get all the bolts out.
