Cold Start Update

So just though you would all like to know where I’m at in the battle to fix my car. After taking almost an hour one morning to start my 98, I couldn’t take it anymore. I dropped the car off the afternoon at the Lincoln dealer. So to keep this short, they had the car for four days and nights, and claim that they couldn’t recreate the cold starting problem. (I think they might have recreated it, but couldn’t find the problem). They tested everything, and it all tested fine. So in the end, they didn’t charge me anything which ruled, but then again, I didn’t find out what was wrong with my car. Since then, it hasn’t been cold enough i.e. under 20 degrees. So even if the car doesn’t start right up, it starts with in 5-10 seconds.

RE: Cold Start Update

Why yes, I actually had seen that thread, in fact, in that thread you link to another thread that was my original cold starting thread.

Anyway, I've thought about the plugs... but for me, it's too cold to freeze to death changing my plugs, and when it becomes warm enough that I wouldn’t mind doing the work, I'm sure the platinums will be operating fine. ::roll::

RE: Cold Start Update

If your reluctant do dive into a spark plug job, you probably should just close this window right now, because your really not going to want to peform the task that I suggest.

I had the same problem on my car, twice in 250,000 miles.
Tiff had the same problem once in 230,000 miles.

It's intermittant and often "un duplicatable" and doesnt throw a error code.

You need either... or both Crank Position Sensor and Cam Sensor.

The Crank Sensor is the hardest of the two and likely the culprit.

The Cam sensor can also do the same thing.. and is very easy to change.. so.
Might has well go buy and replace both.

The Crank Sensor job isn't hard, but it is a PAIN due to having to taking the bolts out of the AC compressor so it can slide to the side.
NOTE.. ONLY LOOSEN the mounting bolts, do NOT remove the lines.. as it's NOT needed.

Should take 1 to 1.5 hours your "first time".
After that, they are a "cake walk".

The crank sensor is located around the 8 oclock position of your Crank Pully {the large on in the center/bottom}
It has two bolts holding it on and one wire connection.

You might talk an independant shop into replacing it for about 100.00.... if you take it to the dealer.. I dont want to know how much they will charge.

Go ahead.. DIVE IN.. the water is FIIIIINE!

RE: Cold Start Update

because that is what an intermittant problem does.

Mine did pretty much the same thing, Tiffs car did the same thing.

Every Mark 8 I've heard of with a Crank sensor or Cam Sensor problem always had an intermittant failure.

RE: Cold Start Update

hey Joe; If go to replace the Crank sensor make sure it snaps in completely. Mine snapped in but not all the way. Thats why I was late getting to Joe's(pony) mom and dads house at the cincy meet last year.
