Congress approved a "cash for clunkers" program

The impact is minimal on "helping" the automobile industry - which is what the purported intent is. It is also minimal on emissions impact or fuel savings.

The reason I care is that it is the taxpayer's money paying for this nonsense.

Yea, but the tax payer is at least benefiting if you are in need of a new car and your trade in is not worth much. I rather see this then just giving the money to the corporations. Yes, over all you are right about the total fuel savings and pollution and having a negligible impact. And at first heard that you had to buy from one of the US 3 auto makers but I don't see that in there. So won't help the big 3 there. But like Paul said the money should have been just given to people to buy a new car (should be American) and not this clunker BS restrictions. But if this gets a few soccer mom's out of SUV and into mid sized sedans I am all for it, lol

I totally agree with JP on this one. The main points of laws like this are to try and force our choice in vehicles and reduce available parts. This car-hating agenda is the #1 reason I voted against Obama.

Our cars will be paperweights parked inside the garage, if that becomes the only way I can keep vehicles I love to own. They'll leave our posession over my dead body!

Looks like my 1998 Crown Vic is qualifying for this...

18MPG combined... has been insured for 5 years... Worth maybe $1500-2000 ... $4500 voucher is a good incentive.

But replacing it would be rather difficult...

... and costly.

And for all the wrong reasons.

I want it to reach 300k!!! It would be my first car to ever do so :D

Currently at 205k, and it has been maintained to the wazoo! I wouldn't want it scrapped for no reason just yet... and gas is still relatively cheap.

Original engine and trans :D
