Cost to replace one coil and plug

i just had #8 coil go on me, just like that, Check Engine light and rough running. Nobody knew which was the #8, driver's side or passenger, believe it or not I had to call JP in WV to confirm it was driver's side.

Anyway... paid $145 complete for a new coil, new plug, and labor. Seemed awfully high to me, is that reasonable?

Ya, thats a little high. The coil was probably fine, its the boots that go A LOT. Cost of the boot is about $14 OEM discount. The coil is a bit more. Sounds like they charged for one hour labor.

So what you paid is probably in line with any dealer, but next time save some cash and try doing it yourself. Its a walk in the park. Two or so small bolts and a plug.

Problem was I wasn't anywhere near home and I wasn't sure what happened. When the code showed misfiring #8 I didn't want to drive the 15 miles back and risk blowing the CAT. It was a friend's gas station that's why I thought it was kind of high... some friend huh?

I had the same thing happen in upstate NY (near Albany) and it cost me $100.00 even to do the same thing...as I had no tools with me, no choice. And that was at a Ford dealer in/near Hoosick Falls, NY. You are right Leo...you'd better choose a better friend!

Glad you got it taken care of.

Being away from home you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.

You are at the mercy of the place you take it..... but it got done right and made it home. Small price to pay for peace of mind!

What, you guys dont keep full tool kits and a plethora of replacement parts in the trunk? lol

Coils fail fairly rarely... the boots fail all the time though.... if it was the boot that was gone you got taken for a ride because it costs $2.00 a pop from an auto parts store (that stocks it... it is VERY hard to find one for the mark). If it was the coil... eh not that bad... they run about 40-80 a pop depending on brand etc.

That is crappy,

coil with boot is 40-45 bucks

plug is 8 bucks or less depending on kind

so that is pretty high for an hour of labor

might have charged for scanning but a friend would have hooked you up since there isn't really much of a cost for scanning tools when viewed on a lifetime cost per use basis.
