Crazy 8's Saturday Race 09-22-07

XLRVIII

Registered
We made a rare daylight appearance at Lone Star Motorsports Park for their "final saturday" race of the points season.

They were running 5 classes of racing
JR Dragsters
Texas A&M sports car club bracket race (for A&M students only)
True Street Brackets (for REAL STREET CARS)
Mod ET/footbrake
Top ET /Electronics

Since we weren't IN the IHRA points series, we didn't enter into MOD ET.
We ran the true street class which is very close to the street stock class we run on friday nights.

We put 4 Mark 8's into round 1
Stone17/Glen
Ndoghouse/Danny
SVO/Jeff
XLRVIII/ME!

We got two time trials ONLY.. which makes it kinda tough, but a well stocked "log book" surely helps!!!

My first time trial, I was the first pair down the track and..
I spun.. and spun bad.
There was no "pedaling" it as it just "CRAPPED the TIRES".
I was rewarded with a 3.4 60 foot time and and 11 second 1/8th??? WTF???
SO that was a blown run.. NO DATA... dammit!

Second time trial I ran exactly my previous weeks round 1 dial in!
RT----.018
60----2.23
330---6.18
1/8th - 9.35 @ 78.03

..knowing the evening air was going to cool down a bit before round 1, I dropped .02 off that run and dialed a 9.33

I had to spot my round 1 opponent 1.5 on the tree, at the finish line he was WAY WAY AHEAD of me, so impulse/experience told me that he'd either TREE'd THE CRAP out of me.. or he's breaking WAY WAY OUT...
so I nipped the brakes at the stripe and "STILL BROKE OUT"
...but the timeslip tells the true story of the run..

Round 1
Left----------Right
Altima--------Mark 8 XLRVIII
10.80--Dial in---9.33
.2130---RT-----.0836
2.39----60-----2.20
6.91---330-----6.12
10.63--1/8th---9.316
65.99--mph--74.70 (dropped 4MPH on the brakes)
.0231 - finish line margin left lane got there first.
-.1665---off dial____ -.0140
So he beat me to the stripe by .02 but broke out by .1665!
WOOT WIN LIGHT LINCOLN LANE!!!

I'll post more rounds in a bit.. I have some stuff to take care of..
STAY TUNED!!!

Round 2:
I got paired with a very very good racer, currently 3rd in points who drives a very very slow FORD VAN. there was 3 and a half seconds between our Dial in which mean I had to SIT for 3 seconds while he drove away.
Luckily I tree'd him pretty good and drove past him mashing the brakes just before the finish line, I dropped 10MPH..on the brakes and took the win!!

Left-----------Right
Ford Van---Mark 8 XLRVIII
12.50--Dial in--9.29
.1698--RT---.0524
2.94---60----2.24

56.98--MPH--68.60
Finish Margin---.0654 Right Lane WIN

Round 3:
Since I had the best RT in the previous round I drew the bye run into the final round!

Dial in 9.29
Rt----.0087
60---2.26
330--6.17
1/8th-9.33

Question... do you launch off idle???

Thank you sir.

Back a couple of years ago.. when I was "shooting for low et".
We found that the cars would "go faster" if we left "off idle" rather than stalling up against the stock convertor.

But.. when we started bracket racing, we focused more on consistancy than "low et"..
Since "idle speed" isn't really "a constant value" you might launch one time at 650 RPMs and the next time at 750RPM's.. or less than 650 RPM's depending on what the IAC was "doing at the time".

SO.... we "gave up" a bit of ET.. and focused on a consistant RPM to launch at.
Since 1000RPM's is easy to SEE on the tach we just picked "that number" and have "ran with it".

I haven't tried an "off idle" launch in a very long time.
Last time I did it.. the car blew the tires off on the hit.

<---really needs to move to a stickier tire.
The street tires I run have a treadwear rating of 380, that is a pretty hard tire.....

So in short, in leiu of a novel..
No I dont launch "off idle" anymore, but DO SUGGEST it to those folks running a STOCK TC...when shooting for "low et".

For an FYI:

We also brought out some old and a new Mark VIII owners to the track with us, Danny (ndoghouse) showed and raced, I dispatched him in rounds one and two, and Kirk & Lara showed in thier maroon 1993 Mark VIII for the fun, but not to race, Glenn (Stone17) also show and raced but left shortly after getting sent to the paddocks in round one.

Thanx to all that showed it was a great time had by all!

How was the learning curve launching at a fixed rpm?

Totally FLAT......

how I worked it into my technique, is..after doing my burnout and before lighting the prestage light I would hold the brake, bring the R's up to 1K and stabilize..
Then I will bump into the first beam, then 4 bumps later the stage light burns brightly.

It's really easy.

I have been experimenting with two of my tunes.
One has stock idle RPM the number 2 position has a 1K idle speed in drive.

Just before hitting the prestage light I can switch to tune 2 and wala..1000RPM's.

Does shocking the converter from idle (flashing) give you more torque multiplication? Reason I ask is I can't floor it off idle in my 98 because it blows off the tires every time. Should I try to launch at 1000 to get a better 60 foot?

Flashing the convertor from idle does give you more Torque multiplication over leaving at 1K...

The convertor wont flash "as high" from 1K {which has a little load} over leaving at idle which doesnt load the drivetrain at all.

Launching at 1K will have about the same effect on ET as deep staging, which will give you a better RT, but you lose a little bit in ET.

If you are shooting for LOW ET, dont launch at 1K.
ALTHOUGH.... since I have been leaving at 1K.. my low ET has fallen below the ET I was at launching off idle..{whew, did that make sense?)

Example: long time ago, launching off idle I ran 14.54
now.. launching at 1K I am below my former best off idle ET.
(now I confusededed myself)
HAHA

Well right now I can't go WOT 100% off idle, I have to roll into the throttle and got WOT once I feel the tires hook. Would it be better to launch from 1000rpm and go WOT right away?

Tommy, Did you hear about the track closing until 2008?

yea, found out a few minutes ago...
I am not holding my breath for 2008.

We were out there this past saturday, and they told us in the drivers meeting that Saturdays were done..but friday nights would continue.

We didn't even get to the NEXT friday night and we get "this".

I skipped the friday night street stock race, so I could "help pump money" into the saturday race....since it WAS the last race.

I guess no good deed goes unpunished...huh.

I'll probably be at Angleton Dragway for 2008, as much as I hate to say it.
LSMP SCREWED me out of my FIRST 13 second pass..which should be coming up.. right around the corner.

Now I have to go find ANOTHER 1/4 mile track to break into the 13's.. because Angleton is only an 1/8th mile track.
I hate to go out to HRP on a friday night, wade thru all the ricers cars, wait 2-3 hours to make a pass...and only get 2-3 passes in the entire night.

DAMMIT (kicks crap around my office)

Oh Tom was pissed on the phone yesterday, I heard lots of crap being kicked ALL OVER his office!

Seems as though John just doesn't know how to run a track properly, you'd think he would have figured that out after all the original employee's started to quit on him, but to no avail I guess he truely is a clueless man.
