Cylinder head removal question......

May be a dumb question, but, can I take one cylinder head off without taking the intake off? Haven't had much time to work on the car lately, or even figure out what side is the problem. I know someone once mentioned zip tying the cam gears to the chain to make sure they go back together right. I am hoping the car didn't suffer piston or cylinder damage when the valve spring broke.
This job is still in the thinking stages. Still needs to be towed back to my house.

Nope. The intake HAS to come off.

Hoping to get to it soon. Too much going on now. Which cylinder is the most common for this type of failure?

If you don't know why are you just pulling the head? You can pull the rocker cover and even fix the spring without pulling the intake.

The intake must be removed to pull either head.

I would not pull the head without absolute assurance it needs pulled. I would do a compression test and leak-down test first. Then I would pull the valve cover on the side indicating a problem before pulling the head.

Well, the problem is the engine doesn't turn anymore. I believe that the valve dropped down into the cylinder. Probably mashed the piston too....
Engine replacement is probably a better idea.

Still, pull the rocker covers first or pull the spark plugs and look down with a flash light. If a piston is destroyed, don't do anything, get a used engine.

can i see the piston with a flashlight? maybe i can borrow a boriscope from work.....still, if i change the engine, i may have to pull the transmission, as i can't turn the engine to get at the torque converter bolts.

Drop everything down with the K member. Pretty easy. I did it once, took about and hour and the engine/trans were on the ground.

How high would I have to lift the car?
I have missed that car. Going from a mark viii to a camry is no fun.

Looks like fun. I'd have to clean out my garage! The last engine I changed was a '70 Chevelle, many years ago, much different.

kinda the same... a lot simpler though.
i may go even simpler than the chevelle.....i may be buying a project bike. if i do that i'll probably ditch the mark viii project, and just buy a running one next summer.
