I know most of the American cars waited until the last minute so switch their cars over from R-12 to the R-134a refrigerant which was by 1995. I was reading somewhere that they introduced the 93 Mark with R-134a. I was looking for a confirmation that is was true.

I have a '93 and to the best of my knowledge, it has the R-134a refrigerant.

There should be a sticker somewhere on the hood or so indicating that it has 134a like on my 97, otherwise its R-12.

ARE YOU SURE? I dont know of any cars that have it in 93, unless the previous owner converted it.

OK, from the manual...

Refrigerant System

Tools Required:

~ Rotunda A/C Service Kit 063-00010

NOTE:
Only equipment designed for R134a refrigerant systems can be used for refrigerant system diagnosis on Mark VIII. R-12 refrigerant service equipment should never be substituted or damage to the system or equipment may result.
:p

RE: Do all Mark 8' s use the R-134a refrigerant

A lot of cars started to use it from the factory in 1993 since the old stuff was going out of production at the end 1995. A few cars came with it in 1992, and I belive all cars switched to it by 1994. All Mark VIII had it.

RE: Do all Mark 8' s use the R-134a refrigerant

From Ford's Service Features 1993, vol.1 , no.1, inside back page:

"Prompted by environmental concerns, Ford Motor Company has launched production of Taurus 3.0L passenger cars equipped with CFC-Free air-conditioning systems. Built at the Atlanta, Georgia assembly plant, the cars will be sold in the Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas metro areas.

Early limited introduction (of the R-134a systems) will be followed by the Lincoln Mark VIII which will be available in all Lincoln dealerships in the model year 1993. By 1995, all Ford and Lincoln-Mercury vehicles will be equipped with the new systems."

So, with that said (or reprinted, as it would be) all Mark VIIIs not only have R-134a, but are the first production Ford vehicles to do so. Not as exciting as having the DOHC 4.6 first, but still cool all the same.

Bah...the Lincoln towncar used 134-a in 1992!

So, the Mark VIII, although has many "firsts"...R-134a wasnt one of them.

But yes...all Mark VIII's came with it(except the ones sold in canada...I believe they didnt come with A/C, as it isnt needed there :+ :+ )
