i want to buy my dad a night vision monocular for his boat for christmas, but i don't know anything about night vision. I've seen some in the $200 price range (about what i want to spend) but i don't know if they're any good. Can anyone here tell me what to look for and what to avoid?

RE: does anyone know about night vision?

I tried epinions already. A lot of the models listed have no reviews. That's why i'm trying to find someone who's used them or at least done the research on them.

Ark Surplus is still there. But i never really thought of them for electronics.

They might have the military version of night vision there. Just a thought. Good luck.

I bought a 3x night vision monocular several years ago. It's a 1st generation device and has a lot of flaws that limit its usefulness. It works OK when there's no other light source around but It's almost useless if there are light sources in the direction you're looking at. If you can't afford a more modern one get him something else.

Well… I have some pretty extensive experience with NVG’s operationally in my job. It’s actually a currency item that I have to maintain for my military job as an aircrew member. I’m using 3rd and 4th generation military specs systems and they are pretty neat, especially when you see AAA and other gunfire with tracers fired at you. The problem is this stuff is running about $12,000 a set. Most of the cheaper sets you see out there are going to be Russian made and designed. That is not necessarily a bad thing as they are usually built very rugged. This is one of those areas where you get what you pay for and more bucks will mean a better system. Cultural or ambient lighting will always be a problem with most commercial systems.
