maybe one of u guys can help me out here. i know next to nothing when it comes to computers so please keep that in mind.

my computer after ive typed in my PW to get into my section of XP, on occasion, loads the opening programs a little on the slow side. during the loading process a popup from my antivirus program (norton) says that my virus protection is off. shortly after, the computer reboots. afterwards it works like it normally does, virus protection and all. what the hells going on? this doesnt happen every time, only every once in a while and i can totally tell when its gonna happen based on the symptoms i listed.

in case this is useful info i use winXP home ed, firefox with norton antivirus/internet security, spybot S&D, spyware blaster, and adaware. i usually do a scan with all these every week after ive downloaded their updates.

if'n anyone is willing to lend some advice, try and dumb it down as much as possible.

RE: dont know whats going on

I would say live w/ it....::wtf::
If it aint broke and all.... The more you go poking around wanting to fix something, the more likely you are to have it NOT restart.

OK that out of the way; sounds like a start-up software issue. You could try using MSconfig and only leave the ones you need running, running.
Google msconfig for more details for your setup.
Have you ever run "hijack this"? I don't think its hardware, although it could be, need more info; nic card, cable, dial up, router, those things could be looked at and then eliminated as reasons. Most likely the only way to really fix it would be a format and a reinstall which isn't worth it if the sys works fine and it's only once in a while.

I just had a meltdown, my C: drive is two 160 gig hard drives in a 320 gig raid 0 array; well one of the drives crapped out on me and I lost EVERYTHING, as much as I preach back-ups at work and to family....I didn't do one on my own sys, all the digi pics of our 16 month old, car shows, movies, games, music, email, everything....GONE. I could pay $2500 for data recovery services....

<puts head in hands and wipes the tears> x( ::nono:: :(

post back w/ results or more info, and we'll see what we all can do.
Edited for bad spellin'

RE: dont know whats going on

Should have used a RAID 1 level, that is what i have. Rather have redundancy then extra HD performance.

RE: dont know whats going on

Yea....but.......I know......but......well.......crap......!!!!

Gotta have that last little bit of speed, squeeze all that I can out of it. Well NOW I've got the ghost image of the array on another HDD AND on DVD. ;)

RE: dont know whats going on

Get a Registry doctor like "RegCleaner" (free) or "EasyUninstall 2.0" ($40).

Both of these have easy point and click features that get rid of the garbage that accumulates in important system files.

RE: dont know whats going on

Paul - XP is a funny creature and I noticed a similarity with our servers. M$ has made this OS boot real fast, but in turn it doesn't. Once the PC starts up and gets to the login screen leave it there until you hear the hard drive go quiet. Then login and you should be fine.
