Draining gas tank

I was talking to Mark Darrah about doing something to his car. How do we drain the gas tank on a 98? Can the gas be siphoned out through the fill tube with a pump?

I'd guess the concern is that the gas in the tank is old enough that you wouldn't want to subject the pump to what's left of it.

How complete is the car? the tank isn't too hard to remove once the exhaust is down and the driveshaft removed... I know to a normal person, that sounds intimidating. But we're not normal people. :D

I've done this multiple times. 😜

I disconnect the filter behind the inner fender liner and connect a suitable hose to the fuel line coming from the tank. Remove the fuel pump relay and use a home made jumper wire to power the fuel pump at the relay socket. Refer to the EVTM for which terminals of the relay socket to jump across.

The gas is apparently ancient. Like Jeremi still had a mark 8 ancient. This procedure sounds complicated. We had better do this outside.

The car is complete. It runs but he has not driven it for a long time.

Not complicated at all...

Here is the fuel pump relay socket with the jumper wire in place...

The hardest part is taking the wheel off and peeling back the inner fender liner. ;)

Addendum...

What may be difficult to see is the hose connection to the fuel line. In that particular pic I posted, my modified '93 has an aftermarket fuel system with the fuel filter in the stock location. In this particular case, the filter has AN hose fittings, so I simply used an appropriate hose with the mating AN fitting to affix onto the fuel line coming from the fuel pump.

On a stock vehicle, I leave the fuel filter in place and disconnect the upper line from the filter leading into the engine compartment. Then you can simply slide a length of hose that fits the filter outlet onto the filter and place the other end into a container to transfer the fuel. (y)
