drive shaft question

why do you have to put a different drive shaft in these cars if you change the rear end gears? just wondering if you can leave the stock shaft in with 430s in the rear end
thanks,
Zack

RE: drive shaft question

I've never heard of a replacement drive shaft requirement when changing the third member gearing.

RE: drive shaft question

You can leave the stock in if you have a 93 and have it balanced(like mine). You will still get vibrations at high speeds sometimes(mine vibs from 95-100 then stops). All the rest of the years have a 2 piece shaft that will shake your teeth out with a steep gear change

RE: drive shaft question

There is a problem with the design of mark VIII's. They shake badly at high speeds. Even my 93 did. When you put in a higher gear ratio the speed that your car will start vibrating is lowered. I think 4.30's will bring it down to about 75 or 80 mph. when the car starts shaking. Maybe lower. Granted, the one piece design is better, and a few people have gotten away without changing it. I would take a guess that approx. 80% of 93 owners have had to do it too.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

RE: drive shaft question

With my stock driveshaft and 3.08 gears, I was getting vibration at 70 mph, by the time I'd get to the end of the track the car was really quite....unmanagable at times. It's really more of a flaw in the design of 2 piece driveshafts. On bigger/longer vehicles like this the manufactures should be putting better running gear in them. For the price of a driveshaft and quite possibly the future headaches, I'd say it's cheap insurance to replace it when oyu can so you don't break something else. After swapping the gears for 4.10's and installing the Dynotech Eng. MMX driveshaft, my vibrations are pretty much gone. That and it looks pretty, not that you can see it....;)

RE: drive shaft question

I think it's pretty subjective. Some cars vibrate noticibly and some barely at all. A really general rule is if you go with 4.10 gears or more you want to replace the driveshaft. I have 3.73s and did not bother changing it. It doesn't seem necessary. There's a little vibration above 90mph but I spend almost no time above that speed. At the drag strip it's only for a couple of seconds, so I'll keep that $600 and spend it on something with more tangible performance benefits.

RE: drive shaft question

The drive shaft in mine starts vibrating at 80mph and this is with a 3.07 rear. The rear view mirror starts shaking and I hear a drone. If I go faster I get worried fast. I have read on this site about the transmission tail shaft breaking from extreme vibration.

RE: drive shaft question

Mine started the vibes at 110 or so stock. MMX with 4.10's and it's fine way past that.

RE: drive shaft question

I was getting a vib at around 80 with the stock 3.07's. When I put the T45 in, I went with an MMX shaft. I'll buy another for my next mark. IMHO, it's well worth the money.
