Good Question, that would be awesome, you could listen to music just about forever. I would contact ALpine or Pioneer as they seem to be up on putting the newest technology in their headunits. You might have better luck with pioneer. They have a DVD player/screen with built in hardrives, navigation, separate sources for backseat passengers, and to top it off, what basically amounts to a g-force built in (0-60, 1/4 mile, etc) all in one unit. If anything could, that would be it. Downside, $$$$

I burned a disc for one of my friends and it ended up having 753 songs on it, with a feww hundred meg to spare. I found a Pioneer that sounds more like a Home Theatre Receiver for $600 that will probably do what I am asking:

It won't work, I've tried it before. I backed up all of my MP3s to DVD-Rs but none of them work in my new Sony DVD player (yes it plays MP3s from CD-Rs). AFAIK your computer is the only thing that can play (or read for that matter) MP3s on DVD.
You could always buy an MP3 player...

When you burned the dvd with mp3's on it, did you use a software that supports creation of mp3 cd's? Or did you burn it as a data disc. I say this because on my home player, cd's burned as 'mp3 cd's for car stereos' will play and you can navigate the tracklist with the remote. I dont have enough a spare dvd-r for this but it's worth a shot.

That's what you are creating when you burn an mp3 disc, a data disc. I burned a data DVD. It plays fine in the computer DVD player.
I have a standalone, dual DJ mp3 player which plays data discs with mp3s just fine.
If you are lacking in the DVD-R spare department, check out supermediastore.com. I bought 100 4X DVD-R and 100 double DVD cases for $57. The DVDs alone were only $36. Haven't burned a coaster yet.

When you select data disc it wont burn a playlist file. I tried normal data disc in my car and it wont play. Your standalone is probably a lot more advanced.

I have played many data mp3 discs in two different mp3 car decks, a portable and my DJ unit. I think the problem lies with the source of your mp3 files. If you downloaded them from Walmart or someplace like that, it could be that you need to burn a separate file in order to play licensed mp3s.
I'll bet you can create an original recording of your own, save it as an mp3, burn it to a data disc, then play it in your car. You could also try ripping a couple of audio discs to mp3 format. For the record, I'm using Nero 6.
