Embedded reporting

So as a point of reflection now that many of these reporters are back to their usual desks what are the opinions of the media coverage of operation Iraqi freedom?

Does anyone know what degree of special training these reporters had to go through beforehand?

RE: Embedded reporting

I think they did an excellenjt job in very hard and dangerious conditions. I believe that 2 died there even. The reporting I thought was excellent - it was the "News-SHOWS" that annoyed me !

RE: Embedded reporting

CNN, The New York Times, and the Washington post did a lousy job. Fox, and the mainstream networks did a good job.

RE: Embedded reporting

The embedded media was only with the regular Army and Marines who went in from Kuwait and they did a fairly good job for the most part. They got to see and hear bullets whizzing by and witness death first hand. Hopefully it will help give them a better understanding of what foot soldiers go through in combat.

However, they were not in the cockpits of the thousands of combat sorties flown by aircrews over there that made it possible for the “ground-pounders” to advance. Also the battles that went on over in the western part of Iraq were fought almost entirely by Special Operations Forces and NOBODY was embedded with them. There should be some very interesting books written on this war several years from now about the phy-ops and Special Forces part of the war.

Thank you for your in-depth analysis.

RE: Embedded reporting

I'd like to read more about the airlift. I'm not trying to pander to you Bill, but it seems to me that it might have been the largest in history. We didn't hear much about it, maybe becuase there were no significant accidents or anything?

RE: Embedded reporting

As a retired sp. opns. medic I was drawn to MSNBC's broadcast close to 24/7 for the first two weeks, especically during the week there were no commercial breaks. Just reliving the "Glory Days" as Bruce Springsteen sang. I think Dr. Bob Arnot rendered the best all round performance. He was NBC's Medical Correspondant, now they're referring to him as the Chief Correspondant. I did notice he moved himself into the Palestine Hotel as soon as possible after arriving in Bhagdad. Until David Bloom's unfortunate death, I enjoyed his reports while riding along on the M88 Tank Retreiver with the 3d ID. It was said that contributed to the formation of the clot, resulting in the pulmonary embolism that killed him. I bet he wished many times he was back in NY doing his Sat and Sun morning gig with Soledad O'Brien. IMHO Both men performed admirably.:)

On the other hand it is MPO, Geraldo Rivera should have been shot for treason.

RE: Embedded reporting

What exactly did Geraldo do/say? I noticed that they booted him, but i missed what it was about.

RE: Embedded reporting

I think he drew a map in the sand showing their location live on TV.

RE: Embedded reporting

He drew a map in the sand depicting Bhagdad, the Euphrates and Tigres rivers, and the location of the unit he was with (101st Abn I think) and their direction of travel. Knowing full well that it was being broadcast for all to see.
