Engine Knocking

I drove my 94 Green Mark VIII for the first time since winter today.

I went to my friends house, and went to move my car, and it was knocking. It wasn't just a tick, it was a horrible knock. The car has about 190 k miles on it.

I wasn't too worried, I was thinking it might be a broken valve spring or maybe the tensioners went south. I thought I'd drive it home and if it blew up, it was already trashed, and I do have a spare engine anyway. Also, I thought it might just be a collapsed lash adjuster, and it would fix itself (yeah, right :D).

The car ran fine, and after about a mile, to my suprise, it did fix itself!:)

Not even a tick now.

So, now I know what a collapsed lash adjuster sounds like. I know it was the lash adjuster because that's the only thing that I know of that can fix itself like that.:)

Well, I was wrong, there is one more thing that can fix itself here, the tensioners.

I started the car this morning, and it started knocking again. It's the same sound I get when I start the engine, but it didn't go away after a couple of seconds.

This makes more sense, as I thought the noise was too loud.

At least it's home now, and I can check it out if I ever get some time.:(

Unfortunatley, this is my Carlisle car.

I've got a nice somewhat green replacement car for you. Definitely Carlisle worthy ;)

Sorry to hear about your troubles Bill.

Yeah, it sounds like a main or rod bearing knock, but I've never heard those eventually go away like this did. When I started it this morning, it sounded like it always does, but this time, it never quieted back down.

This car has always had a horrible sounding tensioner knock at start up, much worse than the red Mark with 205 k miles ever had.

It was great seeing you and your wife again JP. Thanks for making me feel welcome here and letting me stop by.:)

Thanks for offering to let me borrow your green Mark for the drive to Carlisle Jeremi! :D:D

If I could ever afford a car like that, I'd be afraid to even drive it down my driveway.:)

Do you know anyone that has the valve timing tools I could borrow? It's about time I do one of these jobs.:)

The white CE isn't good enough for Carlisle? :p

Heck, I'll drive the black winter Mark if I have to.:D

To me, Carlisle is all about the people, well, it's about the cars too.:)

I know one person that would actually drive a Cadillac to the all Ford Nationals, just to be with the Lincoln people.:D

I had big plans for the green Mark this year though, I'm going to paint the front bumper and put in my brand new grill. I might not have time for all that now.:frown:

The CE is definitley second string to go though, I just haven't finished it for Carlisle yet.

Well, that person sounds totally crazy...
but they must know that Lincoln people are the salt of the earth,
and it's funny, cause I would totally do that...
in fact, I've seen me do it... twice... :D

So, now you've peaked my curiosity, from best to worst how would you rate you FOUR (your crazy too btw) mark 8's? :D

I'm pretty sure I've seen all but the black one, I don't remember thinking any of them looked bad. I do remember the white one looking quite nice actually. :D

I think the Green one is in the best shape except for the high miles, 190k. The CE is a very close second, 115k miles, it just needs a new carpet and a few little things.

I just bought the black one last summer for a winter car, it has pre rusted rockers, but the interior is excellent, the car runs great, and it only has 110k miles.

The red one, my first Mark VIII, is rusted beyond repair now (always a winter and summer car since I bought it) and is almost completley parted out now.

Haha ya! Dr. Bill and his diagnosis....take two of these and call me in the morning.

:D Hahaha!

Nice photo.:)

Actually, I did use a mechanics stethescope. The noise is coming from the drivers side front of the cam cover, right about where the secondary chain and tensioner are.
