Engine mounts, need advice

RE: Engine mounts, need advice

Dan had some solid ones made. He was going to put them on his Mark. I'm going to check mine when the headers are installed. I'm planning on installing a cable between the engine and the frame on the drivers side to help the motor mount cope with drag racing stress. It may even have a turnbuckle in it. When I was a kid in the 60's we used a chain to hold the engine down.

i know mn-12 performance makes solid rubber one for 90 bucks plus shipping. go to tccoa.com and they have a link on the bottom of the page.

you're sure they fit the Mark frame ? They sure look different.

RE: Engine mounts, need advice

So, to get back to the original question, how much should a shop charge to do the motor mounts?

Dan R has some billit aluminum motor mounts.

Do you know how much he's charging, or how many hours labor it would be for a shop to install?

RE: Engine mounts, need advice

You don't want a shop to install them. I imagine it would be in the neighborhood of 10-12 hours. The mn12 ones should fit just fine.

RE: Engine mounts, need advice

10 to 12 HOURS?!?!? Are you kidding me? So how the hell am I gonna get them done then? I have a friend that's a mechanic, but I hate to ask him because every time we go to do something to my car, there is a problem. How difficult of a job is it? How long would it really take?

Thanx.

RE: Engine mounts, need advice

Please, I need some responses here. I don't want to keep driving my car with a broken motor mount. I called the dealership today and they told me 2-3 hours per mount.

RE: Engine mounts, need advice

You should be able to handle it yourself if you have any experience with mechanics. If the dealership told you 2-3 hours per side, then that is your worst case scenario. I still think you should check it out yourself. Just jack up the car and take a look.

RE: Engine mounts, need advice

if you were closer, i'd do it for you on the cheap.

It's not that hard to do. Put the car on jackstands, support the engine on a cherry picker or one of them bars that goes across the strut towers. Put a jack under the k-member. Remove the 8 reverse torx bolts that hold the k-member in. Lower it a few inches, as much as you can without bothering to unhook anything, and you should have plenty of access to the motor mounts.

RE: Engine mounts, need advice

Thanks for the info, guys. I appreciate it. I'll let you know what I decide to do, and how it goes. The problem is, I have very little cash right now, so anything that I have to pay a shop to do, is going on the plastic, and we all know that it's best to limit using those things as much as possible. ;)

RE: Engine mounts, need advice

Hell, you might be able to do it without lowering the K member.

RE: Engine mounts, need advice

Use a 15mm regular (6 point) socket. You don't need any special reverse torx bits at all.

RE: Engine mounts, need advice

I just got the mounts from Mn12 performance. Is it safe to use an engine hoist and work under the car at the same time? Isn't that like using a jack as a jack stand.
I really need to know if it is safe!

where is it safe to lift the engine?
I think Dave did a post on that, I'll try loking for that in the archives.

RE: Engine mounts, need advice

No, that's fine. The engine is held in the back by the transmission crossmember. You should be fine in just the front. I worked on mine for a long time with only the hoist holding it up.
