Engine noise through the stereo.

I have real bad engine noise through my stereo ever since I replaced my bad stock JBL amp with an after-market Clarion. I have a Clarion deck and had it before changing the amps.

Anyway, I just recently discovered that the noise subsides when I slow quickly then comes back as I release the brakes. Very wierd. The noise also coincides with the fan coming on and off.

Some say a ground is bad. Maybe cheap RCA's. I can't figure it out.

When I moved the RCA's to the opposite side of the car from the amp's power cable (some genius at the car audio place installed them taped together, even I know not to do that) the noise changed as I moved the RCA's around the cabin, like they were searching for reception.

You can buy ground isolators (i think thats what they are called) from a car stereo shop. It eliminates engine noise and other things from coming through the speakers.

I am not for sure but i dont think it matters. It might be a good idea and call a local stereo shop and ask them about the isolators, and if you were to buy some where exactly should you put them. Sorry i dont have more answers, i just know about them but havent used them yet. I am still looking to upgrade my stereo so i havent done it yet.

Here is a description i found for the ground isolators:
The most likely cause of speaker hum is due to something called a ground loop. A ground loop occurs through differences in resistance in the electrical system. When a computer or audio component is connected to an amplifier, a path is provided for electricity to flow from one wall socket to another as the electrical system tries to balance itself. This causes speakers to hum! The Xitel Ground Loop Isolator goes between your audio equipment's connection, breaking that ground loop.

Here is a link to what they look like.

ya ya, i know its a link to amazon uk, but at least this gives you an idea

Maybe it's one or both of the ignition RF suppression capacitors under the hood?
I know there is one on each side on the engine, but I don't remember exactly where they are.

Napa sells them. Make sure the little prong connectors are intact (they are old and break easily, EXPECIALLY the stupid clips) and not corroded.

I went to a NAPA and showed them the originals and they couldn't find them.

Do you have a picture or a number for the ones they have at NAPA? Is there some modification to it?

How about this, does it matter that the stock JBL amp is a 6 channel and the Clarion I put in is a 4 channel? Does the 2 extra channels in the system cause a loop in the new amp?

Hmmmm....I thought I saw a picture of diffent connector options that they sell. Regardless, its just a spade connector, if you wanted to you could clip it and solder or use a regular electrical spade and heat shrink tube it.

I thought about that. Doesn't it have to be a certain farad value or something? Where would it tell you what they are rated at?

Oh, I just now realized that I started this thread in the wrong forum. I'm suprised it hasn't been kicked to the audio forum yet.

I guess it can fall under electrical too.
