Engine running funny ?

While driving the car, when I get off the throttle the car sounds like it is trying to die,(like it is shutting off and on by the sound) then the other nite I decided to get on it and when I did the check engine light came on but then went off,the car once you let off the gas still sounds like it is shutting off and on looking at the tach you can see the tack moving back and fourth, any suggestions?

RE: Engine running funny ?

since you don’t have any info in your profile.. please give us year, and mileage, and last tune up.

RE: Engine running funny ?

start by changing the plugs, wires, and fuel filter. You can go to autozone and have them pull the codes, that should tell you why the check engine light came on.

Opps sorry,1993 Mark VIII,Mods are Chip,Wires,MAF,Trans updates,Dual Exhaust,64,000 miles.Also have changed plugs,and filter at 60,000 miles,along with the trans fluid.

I would have to suspect the mass air unit to be the culprit here.

If you have our maf kit and you are experienceing a surging deceleration then "clock" the maf's electronics.

Example: If your electronics on the top of the maf kit is in the 12:00 position then loosen the hose clamp to the throttle body rubber and move it to the 1:00 and try that.

Keep clocking until this goes away.

It can get a "funny" read if its not perfect and cause that deceleration characteristic.
Its very rare and unusual but easy to remedy.

Same thing happened to me on my LMS mass air flow. Geno's idea of moving the sensor worked for me. Still, get the codes checked out. I found another unrelated problem that was setting off codes, and I was ignoring it because I assumed it was mass air.

Yeah, in NJ they have full service gas stations and some idiot shoved the pump in so hard that they broke the valve and I keep getting evaporative emmissions codes. The point is not to assume that your CE light is mass air flow, always check the codes to be sure.

RE: Engine running funny ?

Yes, since the crank sensor is used by the ICM(Ignition Control Module) to monitor engine rpm. Basically, it is an AC generator/proximity sensor sensing the gear teeth of a gear behind the front engine cover. Some issues have been reported with the harness connector to the crank sensor, so you may want to carefully examine that also. Since it is an AC signal with varying frequency any signal loss can be misleading the ICM causing timing issues. After the crank position sensor issue is resolved, clear the codes and check for further DTCs as you may have other ignition issues hidden by the crank sensor code.

RE: Engine running funny ?

ARen't you glad you checked the codes before blaming it on the mass air? I was pulling my hair out on that one.

http://www.geocities.com/just280/mynew8.jpg Well really I would have rather it had been the MAF cause it would have been easier to have fixed than the 02 sensors,How many here has replaced their own 02 sensors, cause the ones who has knows what a pain they can be !!!!! But in all yes I am glad it was only them instead.

RE: Engine running funny ?

I replace the drivers side. No problem took maybe be 35-45 minutes.

RE: Engine running funny ?

I thought you had a crank sensor code? What led you to the O2 sensors?
