Factory Stereo Removal

I'm trying to remove the factory stereo from my '98 Town. I made myself some "din" tools from coat hangers. I inserted them in the removal holes on the front of the stereo, but I just can't get the thing to move. Any hints?

Could I have broken something? If so, what can I do to fix the problem and remove the stereo?

RE: Factory Stereo Removal

You can buy the tools at walmart-they are by the car stereo dash kits and wire harneses.Stick them in-then push both to the outside gently and pull out the radio.

Sometimes the factory unit will get lodged in or stuck in just because. once the din tools are in tape up a wide flat tip screwdriver. and GENTLY try to loosen the stereo.

The coat hanger method did indeed fail. The left side of the radio engaged properly, but the right side didn't. Something was busted on the right side and when I inserted the coat hangers they pushed the bracket out of the way and jammed it. I pried out the left side, then managed to get a hack saw blade into the right side to cut off the bracket that was jammed.

After that the installation went well. I ordered a stereo from Crutchfield and they supplied all the installation hardware. The stereo insert needed some massaging before it fit, but it is in now and it looks and sounds fine. I even bought an adapter that allows the stereo to work with the steering wheel controls. Very cool.

do you have a link to the module that links it to the steering wheel i never have seen one that would work propperly.

Here is the link to the item on the Crutchfield site:

The installation instructions were good. It took a couple of tries to program it so that the buttons worked as I wanted them to work, but now I've got it working. This unit gives me the same controls that the factory stereo had.

They have different units for different brands of stereos. You have to buy one with a wired remote control plug-in at the back of the unit. Mine is Sony, but others brands are available.
