Hi all, I've bee nplanning for a while to actually finish my speaker pods, since the ones I have now are a bit rough. My original plan was to put to midrange and tweet into the stock kickpanel. After careful consideration, I've thrown out that Idea for one that will look way cooler, and give me my foot room back.
It's kind of hard to desrcribe what I'm doing, hopefully I can get some pics taken soon (what I've give for a digital camera!)
My plan is to put my 6.5 inch midbass right where the trunk/fuel switches are now, the midrange above it, and the tweeter above the midrange, all following the curveof the door. All will be angled toward the driver for optimal soundstaging and clarity.
To do this is taking quite a bit of work.
Last week I rerouted my trunk and fuel door popper switches to the center console. I used an old set of door panels I had and cut out the old switches to the proper shape, and it fits perfectin the console, and takes up almost no room. I tapped into the wires right next to the drivers seat under the "tunnel" and routed them up through the console, and in a little door that was already built into the storage space.
Then I had to take out the map pockets off the doors. To do this, take the door off, and remove the little nut on the back. Also remove the carpet. It's held in on the back be staples, and on the front by glue. There is a crease at the back of the map pocket; the pocket just comes off there. Now there is enough room for the midbass, without taking up foot room.
I have all the MDF rings already made (1/2 inch MDF). Before I can finish I am waiting on my new imaging CD to arrive. After talking to several competitors, I went with the Sheffield Labs "Drive" CD.
What's left sounds easy, but I have a feeling it'll take quite a bit of time and effort. Home Depot sells Plumbers strapping aka radio backstrapping for a few bucks. It's basically a roll and thin bendable steel that will keep it;s bent shape fairly well. I will use this to position the speakers properly. Then I will sit in my car for hours, getting everything right . Once done, I will glue dowel rods in place, securing the speakers rings. Next I will glass the area, using the space left by the old map pocket as part of the enclosre the the midbass, while retaining the stock lines. Finally the finsishing work (sanding and sanding and sanding) I haven't decided yet if I will paint the pods to match the rest of the burgandy accents in my interior, or if I will vinyl. I guess it depends on how well they turn out.
Wish me luck, Due to my wife schooling and my work, I can only work on my project on weekends, so it may take awhile. If I've been a good boy my wife may let me work all weekend and I could have it done next week.
