First car to have an integrated cell phone ???

RE: First car to have an integrated cell phone ???

The '89 Toro did have a phone, but it wasn't hands-free. It came with a hand-set that had to be used/held. I stay correct. "Hands-Free" was Imperial, New Yorker & Dodge Dynasty. Imperial was 1st, by a few months. If I recall, Imperial had it as of December 1989 and New Yorker/Dynasty followed in March-April of 1990.

So the Lexus may have been the very first then? It was available a touch before mid-1989 as an early 1990 model. Score another win for Lexus!! :+

And I still think you are wrong. Go read the original post. It said "What was the first US car to have the integrated cell phone option ?" It said nothing of hands-free. Therefore, the 1989 Olds was first. Maybe not hands-free...but definitely integrated as part of the car. You stand corrected. :p

RE: First car to have an integrated cell phone ???

Had to go into my library and do some serious digging thru Lexus, Olds & Imperial folders, flyers and brochures. Herewith the answer:-

First car to have an integrated phone was the 1989 Toronado. Everything was built into VIC with the touch screen. A handset was mandatory to use. It only came in black, and resided in the center console. The option was not available with the bench seat, as there was no place to store the handset. The hanset was needed to hear and be heard.
The first car to have a "Fully" Integrated phone, requiring no handset was indeed the Imperial. It was available at 1990 production start-up in August of 1989. 5 months later in Janaury of 1990 it came on line for the Chrysler New Yorker and the Dodge Dynasty SE.

Regarding Lexus. It was listed as available for the 1990 model year, but was on restriction for most of the year. It did appear beginning with the 1991 models, but was in short supply most of the year.
