Okay I just found a board on the ford escapes. I have a 2001 xlt with the v-6, 4x4 and auto tranny. It has 87,000 on it. My wife is the one that mainly drives it.

I change the tranny fluid on a normal bases. Before the first change I would get t/c shudder. I had the fluid changed to Mercon V and had the converter drained as well during the change. Since then I have always used Mercon V.

Now here is my question, they had a ford tech on there saying that changing over to mercon V is bad for Ford Trannies. Is this True???

Like I said I have had no problems at all with changing over and I don't understand why it would be bad for a ford tranny. When I had the Mark VIII I also changed over to Mercon V and never had a problem with it.

I thought the 01 calls for Mercon V. Double check with your manual. As far as i know Mercon III and V don't interchange, but if you drain all the fluid and put in Mercon V it should be fine.

I guess Ford labeled the tranny dipstick wrong and it was fulled with Mercon III from the factory. Yes they don't interchange and I had all the fluid drained out before putting Mercon V in it.

I just read a post on the escape site saying that Ford told them not to use Mercon V because they Tranny wasn't made to use it and to only use Mercon III in it otherwise the tranny could fail.

The Mercon V bottle label shows that it is completely compatable with Mercon III.

The only issues i've heard of with mercon V is that it works it's way past seals easier, and a number of seals had to be updated in 97 or 98 to take care of the issue. I wouldn't worry about putting it in anything newer. Or older, for that matter, unless it leaks.

Thanks for the info guys. I guess some ford tech told them not to use it and when I said that I use it on the Escape they right away attacked me saying I will ruin my tranny.

Funny thing is before I used it the tranny would shudder. Once I changed the fluid to Mercon V I haven't had a single problem as of yet (knock on wood). What is it with Ford trannies anyway?

I got an '01 navigator with the same shutter. It even came with merc 5. I dont know what the problem is with Ford, but this will probably be my last unless they make some changes. I just dont understand how my 93 had the shutter and they could not fix the problem in manufacturing by 2001.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

Adam appearently this shudder is in alot of their cars. I read about alot of F-150 owners having the same issues as well.

I have the same running gear as an f150, except mine is a four valve motor. Same tranny though. The saddest part is that my mark had more options than my new truck.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

What year is your Navi? We have 2004 and the tranny is great, but had to have the driver seat replaced. I do have to say i like the power liftgate and power folding rear seat. Do you have the DVD option? We got it for the kids and it makes longer trips nice.

Wow according to those Escape guys i must be really messing up my Escape. Appearantly now running Syn. oil is also a big no no in the Escape.

That is all I have ever used when changing my oil. I guess 87,000 trouble free miles is nothing to them. Have any of you heard about syn. oils being bad for engines? Man I am getting tried of getting trashed over there because I post answering members questions honestly with what I have used in the Escape. Talk about a group of people with sticks up there _____.

I have an '01. The '03 and newer are a whole lot nicer. The newer models are a whole lot closer to what they should be. I did not get the heated seats, sunroof, dvd, or navigation. The one I got was the only one I could find within 300 miles with the 4wd. 4wd is hard to come by in florida, but I need it when pulling my boat out of the water. Launch ramps are very slippery down here.
