Friday Night Test and Tune Videos

RE: Friday Night Test and Tune Videos

Sweet times Mike...think mine is 9.80's consistant now in 1/8, but havent been to track after last reflash. Finally got the leaking tailshaft line corrected. (The braided steel line kit comes with way too small of a nipple fitting and strips out easily when you tighten it into the tailshaft.) And now theres a leak on the top of tailshaft somewhere. Then i think ill be ready with a dry tranny like its supposed to be soon. Found a little puddle in the garage when i took it out to clean it the other day. Had to charge the batt overnight cause it was dead from sitting so long. Also found that my back wing is cracked from some idot pushing on the wing instead of the trunk when they loaded it onto the flatbed wrecker. And two dents and scratches magicly appeared on the doors that i know werent there in NY when i had it detailed last. I'm not worried about fixing it for looks now, just getting car sorted out and wiring to see if i can make the SSHS.
Now tell us a lil more about the secret wepons all you guys are packing here and on the other board? haha the suspense is killing me.:)

Next Monday, I am going to have installed by my Buddy Steve B. at Team Ford, a PI torque converter, j-mod/shift kit, and a deep well Ford racing trans oil pan to make up for the 2qt loss of Mercon V going to the 9.5" PI tc from the 11" stock tc. After that, Scott L. will install the fo-tens and t-lock. Then, I need to go to Summit and get a set of M/T dr's.
[/div]

Triple disc? What stall on the PI?

Do you have a tranny cooler?

I drove a J-modded(350 HP? level) Mark VIII and I am glad I went with a Baumann shift kit.

RE: Friday Night Test and Tune Videos

Go for at least a 3500 stall converter, with these lockup 4R70W transmissions you can get a stall as high as you want without worrying about driveablity problems. Ask JP, he's got the 3500 stall...

RE: Friday Night Test and Tune Videos

A lot of choices really depend upon the anticipated use of the car. As far as the converter, NO manufacturer I talked to recommended anything over 3200. For a daily driver, they may be right. Since I wanted all future options open, I went with the triple disc over the single. With boost I may agree with the 3200 stall selection, but I still think the 3500(or more?) is more appropriate for NA applications.

I disagree with the lack of a tranny cooler however. The FLM truck cooler is a good option though. With 4.10s and the stall converter WITH a B&M cooler, my tranny temps were too high for my taste and I went with the mondo-sized cooler bypassing the radiator. But again, my application differs from yours most likely - but not enough to say no cooler is needed IMHO. You do have the advantage of the later model tranny however.

Have you driven a Mark VIII with the Baumann shift kit? I don't know what you plan to have the shift firmness level set at, but do not fear going to level 5 on the shift firmness level. The shift firmness at level 5 is directly proportional to the throttle application. ;) And yes, with the SCT Xcal2, you have the option of applying more line pressure if you wish.

All I know is with what you have planned, you will not recognize your Mark VIII when you're finished. It will be a new car experience with a very high grin factor! Good luck!! :)

RE: Friday Night Test and Tune Videos

Mike, if you get the chance, try the 5 setting. We did tone mine down, as the 5 was fun, but I thought it would be a little harsh on my lower back for everyday driving to and from work in traffic. But it was fun.... }( I forgot what it ultimately ended up being set at.

Steve mentioned starting with a half way setting with the shift kit. I told him that I do not need to hear tire chirp, and a break neck shift on every shift. If anything, WOT chirp only, is as firm as I would like to go with it. Normal around town shifting with my Lidio tune is perfect, and I would hate to loose it.[/div]

The shift firmness from the shift kit is different than the shift firmness from the tune.

I look at it like this(in non-technical terms). The shift firmness from the tune is accomplished from pressure. The shift firmness from the shift kit is accomplished with spring and shim selection and flow modification. But pressure is variable with throttle. Hence with light throttle, you will get 'quick' but relatively docile shifts. But mash the throttle and the quick shifts come in harder with more authority.

When I have my switch chip at the stock settings, the shifts are more tame than when I have the switch chip in the 'race' selection. I can even tell the difference between the original chip program and the dynotune program. When in the 'race' or 'dyno' position, driving around town without chirping can be difficult with moderate to heavy throttle.

What I'm trying to emphasize is you can have the best of both worlds. You can be tame with light throttle or you can be wild with a heavier foot. Don't short-change yourself. ;)

RE: Friday Night Test and Tune Videos

I know some guys with the Torsen units and they are generally well spoken of. After wearing out my Ford Trac-lok, I went with the Detroit Truetrac when I changed to 4.30s.

Good luck with the mods! :)

Sweet Vids Mike! That last one made me sad missing my 79 TA. Thanks for posting em.;) I was running flat 12's back in the day with no spray.
Did you disconnect your front swaybar for SSHS6? In all your pics your front end comes way up now. Your car must be loving those gears.}(
