RE: Friday Night WIN!!

Congrats on the win, did it feel good to finally let your car stretch it's legs with the 1/4 mile run?

RE: Friday Night WIN!!

Double duty!! :D Impressive. :) Awesome RTs!! ;)

I read in between the lines and think I understood your dial-in strategy... until the 9.68? I don't get it. Please share your thoughts. This is one area I've struggled with.

Thanks!
The 1/4 mile is always fun... but I enjoy the 1/8th mile better. Everything happens quicker in the 1/8th... not to mention I only pick up 20 miles per hour from the 1/8th to the 1/4 mile.

To tell you the truth I was very surprised I went 14.93... as hot as the car was after just running the jackpot race, I thought the car would do something like a 15.0.

Well, I was chasing my dial in all night. And as you can you tell most of passes were won "off the gas". I really didn't have a good handle on what the car was going run.

My strategy on that 9.68 dial in was this...

Take another look at my Time Trials.
40 min cool down - 9.69
round robin pass - 9.83
40 min cool down - 9.69

After I broke out in the 2nd round of street stock, I wasn't going to be running right back to the lanes anymore...
I knew I was going to get a good cool down between the jackpot rounds. The question was, "how long?".

I also took a look at my time slips from the previous rounds, and noticed from my 330FT times that the car wasn't slowing down on round robin runs like it was earlier in the evening.

The air temp was dropping, cars were going faster, and my cool down was getting longer by the second.

Take a look at the time on JP round 2 to round 3. Round 2 happened at 10:23pm, I was called to the lanes for round 3 at about 11pm...

I took a gamble and dialed the car for 40 min cool down pass, with a small breakout cushion... 9.68 it was.

But as we all know the car doesn't ALWAYS agree! hahaha
I ended up running 9.74 with my foot on the floor. But your luck was strong, and I won that round with my .094 RT to Ogilvie's .239. Check out the finish margin and his off dial time on that pass.

90% of all races are won and lost on the starting line.
If I've told them once, I've told them a thousand times... DON'T GET IN FRONT OF THE LINCOLN! hahaha

Ahhhhhhh... that makes sense then.

I've been trying to follow your advice, and one thing I've learned is to keep atune to how the other cars are running, i.e. faster or slower, and take that into account on my proposed dial-in. ;)

Keep up the good work! :)

Yeah it's always a good idea to be aware of whats happening around you... but don't ever set your dial based on other cars. You always want take a good look at the clock and your time slips before picking a number.

I'm guessing you've been keeping log book? It's a good habit I need to get back into myself. It makes it so much easier to "see" what's happening.

I wish. :+ Actually I guess I do, but it's a post race 'electronic' log. I never could get myself to fill out an official log book(yet) even though I do have one.

Here's my SOP... I jot all the following parameters down on the timeslips between runs.

I use the cell phone to access the web for local stats on The Weather Channel or Accuweather. I record the latest values for temperature, humidity and barometric pressure.

I have my outside air temperature indicator in the inner fender right next to my intake filter. I record the 'indicated track temperature' as well.

I have a fancy watch that has an altimeter/barometer function and I note that reading as well.

If I 'tune' the car any, such as fuel pressure, tire pressures, etc..., I will jot that down as well.

In between runs, I fan through the slips and see if the temperature is trending hotter/cooler, the air pressure is rising/falling or the humidity is increasing/decreasing. I calculate an approximate density altitude. I keep a check on the operation of my cooling fan over-ride. I also check the tire pressures and make any needed adjustments. If I'm in competition, I'll take a mental note of the time between runs. If I flub a run(spin bad, redlight, etc...), I'll note this on the slip as well. I take all this into consideration as well as perceived track conditions along with observing how others are doing.

I use to try to 'calculate' a dial-in - even if just for the exercise. Then I would consider that as a baseline to work from. Lately, I've just started experimenting with a ET Predictor program on my PDA. I think it holds more promise than my home brew calculator.

Post race, usually that evening or the next day or so, I enter all this data in an ongoing excel spreadsheet. I use the 'net to access recorded weather almanac data for the locality from www.wunderground.com for the "official" weather stats and use an online calculator to calculate density altitude and corrected ETs and trap speeds. I then calculate all sorts of numbers and graphs to track my progress and analyze my performance.

RE: Friday Night WIN!!

Here is the tracks recap of the friday night races, as posted on www.lonestarraceway.com

It seems like it's been forever since we ran Friday Night Street Stock! And what a night it was! 16 cars, trucks, and motorcycles answered the call.

First round winners:
Tiffany Spain, David Roadarmel, Paul Garcia, Robert Parker, Tommy Douglas, Glenn Snedden, Steve Pratt, & Dan Ogilvie. The Lincolns ruled Round 1!!!

Second Round
Paul Garcia gets treed by Tiffany and comes on hard, and pushes Tiffany to a break out.
Steve Pratt lines up against Dan Ogilvie who red lights with an -.0093! OUCH
David Roadarmel takes on Glenn Snedden in a battle of the 94 Mark VIII's with Roadarmel's advantage off the tree being the key to victory.
First Timer Robert Parker takes out the Points Leader Tommy Douglas who jumps the gun with an -.0191 Red Light.

Semi Finals
David Roadarmel keeps the Hot Rod Lincoln winning with a big advantage at the tree, and sends Robert Parker back to the pits with a big smile on his face for going to the semis in his first time out in a big ole pick up truck!
Paul Garcia is given the win when Steve Pratt rushes the tree to a -.0567 Red Light.

FINALS!!
You can tell it's been a while when both drivers sleep at the tree. It was a good race to the stripe, with Paul Garcia again pushing a Lincoln to break out!

Garcia DIAL 7.80 RT .3197 ET 7.8687 MPH 89.25
Roadarmel DIAL 9.50 RT .2548 ET 9.4574 MPH 76.04

RE: Friday Night WIN!!

Hell yea, I couldn't have said it better myself.

The track announcer is a real "good guy", he gives us props quite often!

I was at one point keeping an excel sheet with the slip data, weather ect. But I noticed that when I write down this info in my log book after each run I seem to have a better grasp as to what the car is doing. It makes it much easier (for me) to dial the car whan I can see all the runs side-by-side.

Here it is Friday again and the ants in my pants are back! haha
