From Park to Drive

My 98 transmission will go in to reverse with no problem what so ever but when I go to drive it hesitates to lock in to gear it is as if it’s in neutral. If I give it a little throttle it will then go in to drive. It will do this after sitting but once I’ve driven it, it will be fine for the day tell it gets cold again. It goes through all the gears perfectly. I have checked the fluid levels and it fine.

Do you check the fluid while it is cold or after the engine gets up to operating temp? Ya gotta check tranny fluid at operating temp. I think you will find the fluid LOW.

Once you check your fluid level if it is full while hot your next step should be to check your fluid pressure while cold then check it while its warm if the psi. Is drastically. Different. You might be dealing with a worn out front pump how many miles are on the car

Park or neutral, putting it through the gears won't do anything unless you just serviced it. It should have fluid already cycled through the gears.

I know it’s not the levels I’ve checked and rechecked. I even dropped the pan and replaced the filter and fluid this weekend. It still drives fine but has difficulty going in to Drive after sitting but reverse works fine. The car has 180k miles, the old fluid was dark but not burnt and No metallic or metal shavings in the fluid, the bottom of the pan looked pretty clean.

how do you check the psi? 180K

To check you fluid pressure you have to get a gauge. That gets put in line in the transmission lines they make a gauge specifically. For this also you might be having a issue with lazy solenoids. They get sticky when they get old if your fluid pressure checks out OK that's your next step

They may clean up after the new fluid is in there longer than a day or two. Hope you used Mercon V, and also drained the Torque converter as it is a good collector of junk also.

Yes it was Mercon V. I did notes leaking from the bell housing I’m going to spray it all off and see it keeps it up.

I think you might be getting close to a transmission rebuild all the problems are a sign of the transmission going bad best of luck

yah, I went by a shop today to have them look at and they drained the new fluid and it already smells burnt after i changed it and the filter this last sunday. Im calling around to get it rebult now. I did find a PIC you guys might find helpfull

Well I'm not from Dallas but I had mine rebuilt at a shop by me for 1300 so I would definitely suggest. Looking around. I had prices as high as 2000 for the rebuild has your car ever had a transmission?
