Front end HELP!

I think there is a problem with the steering rack. I have a lot of play in the front wheels. Particularly the driver side wheel. It looked like the rod goes in and out of the rack. Does it sound right? Is that rack hard to repalce? I understand I will have to get an aslignment if thats the thing, but, how hard of a job is it? HELP!!!
 
Sounds like it could be worn out inner tie rods. And yes, you will need an alignment after the repair.

He said that the rod goes in and out of the rack; it can only be a rack or tie rod issue.

I opt for the tie rod, though you can verify it by moving the plastic boot and check where the movement actually is. If there's play in the ball joint, then you've got inner tie rods to replace. If the movement extends past the ball joint and into the rack, then the rack needs to be looked at.
 
i'd put my money on inner tie rods. the racks rarely fail in these cars, probably one of the best built parts of the car!!
